But YES, you should always perform a manual backup just in case. It only takes a few minutes, so better to be safe......
Besides, I don't trust auto installs where it automatically backs up whatever. What if the power goes out? What if you accidentally bump into the Pearl causing a disconnect while the update is taking place, etc., etc.
Frequent backups are good.
|
Cool. Thanks. Like I said, I did manual backups first, but I just wasn't positive if I could skip this to save time. I'd rather keep all my info though, so I'll continue to manually backup before screwing with anything.

Cool it is indeed different, when browsing through songs it'll show the track & time info, where as before it showed the file name & size.
There are also ~5MB more free RAM.

Regarding backups, when I do such a major upgrade like this I want to be 'clean' - for instance, a regular upgrade will leave pieces of the old DST patch installed that you no longer need. I found this out the hard way when I first tried a 4.2.0 -> 4.2.1 upgrade, lots of old crufty randomness was left on my 8100.
1) by-hand do a custom backup and choose only the databases which matter (email, messages, bookmarks, etc.) - follow your nose, they're easily named. It's pretty obvious what *not* to include (DST Patcher files, for instance).
2) upgrade & wipe the device
3) reinstall custom backup
4) reinstall 3rd party apps and data (*)
Step #4 is questionable, it depends on your specific apps. For me it's all online connected stuff (JiveTalk, GMail, SyncML, etc.) so I don't need to backup any data off the device, I just reinstall and reconfigure them. Your needs may be different if you have apps which store local data (password safes, expense trackers, flight thingies, etc.) so follow my advice with a grain of salt.
hope this helps someone.

The version of Desktop Manager on the TMO site is only 4.2.1.8. I'm running 4.2.2.14 (Apr 26, 2007) and the version on the RIM website is probably newer since the date on it is 18 May. Select Desktop Software 4.2 SP 2. https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do

It worked really great for me. Another smooth OS upgrade.
For some reason the ALX file that was posted in this thread did not unlock any extra themes. I only have 4: BB Dimension Icon, BB Dimension Today Plus, BB Dimension Today, BB Dimension Zen, and T-Mobile Zen.
I noticed that multi-tap texting is still a problem when typing fast.
I was coming from 101, so I don't see a lot of difference in 103.

FYI
I had problems installing the new OS on my laptop. I contacted Blackberry tech support, and spent about three hours with him on the phone, then spoke with another tech for another two hours!
Finally used a different laptop, and the install went fine.
However, what both of them suggested to me was that I create a backup, then when I'm installing the new OS, choose to wipe the device clean, and only install the OS.
Once the OS is installed, THEN manually install from the backup I created before starting the process.
Anyways, that's what they both, independently, recommended.

I downloaded the update twice and ran them. Both did not upgrade my BB. It's still version .64

Did the upgrade and it went just as smooth as any other upgrade. Everything seems to be working fine.

You probably are simply running the EXE file and NOT upgrading through DeskTop manager.
Look at T-Mo's site and follow the directions. You should be updating through DM, not directly from Windows Explorer.
At least I think that is what you are doing wrong. Pressing the exe file [without DM or or the Pearl connected] will install the upgrade OS, after that you then connect the Pearl, open DM, and it should automatically prompt to do the upgrade through DM.

Updating to 4.2.1.103 - my expierience
Hello, I updated to 4.2.1.103 and thought Id just write about all the steps I had to do to get all apps working again.
General:
Need to re-input the apn in TCP settings, in my case wap.voicestream.com- Resolved connection issue with Opera Mini 4 beta and probably any other 3rd party app.
Internet Email:
After changing the option to seperate messages (sms vs email) had to resend service books after no icons appeard for them. After resending they reappeard. Now Gmail and my tmo blackberry email are working again and seperate from my SMS texts
Notify Link:
I use this at work, to connect with our groupwise email system. Had to re-register the device, then OTA load calendar, Contacts, and tasks. Also needed to change schedule push settings back to what they were previously.
BB weather:
Recieved a invalid url message. Tried reinstalling, but that failed to fix the problem. Then in options I checked the box "Disable MDS proxy" which fixed the issue.
Gmail App, Google Maps and Gtalk worked fine without intervention after the upgrade.
Hope this helps anyone who has problems after updating.
Cheers~

I'm having trouble installing from the Tmo website also. I run the exe file, then in Desktop Manager I run the application loader and nothing changes. Can anyone help me?
This is my first OS upgrade and I tried to search for an answer but couldn't find one.

Downloaded this Morning and it ran fine all day. Even my BT worked trouble free. I can't seem to get my opera working again but other than that seems good so far.

I had that same problem or a similar one. 4.2 OS was greyed out in Desk top manager, even though im running the exact version available from Tmo. Dont know why, but the solution that worked for me was to do the install withouth the desktop manager, run the exe without the desktop manager running, its documented in t-mos instructions. Hope that helps.

Funny I knew this from the past but it didn't work earlier. I decided to retype wap.voicestream.com did a battery pull and suddenly it works. Don't know the earlier problem. But thanks anyway.

Maybe it was a fluke but after I experienced problems I reentered wap.voicesteam.com saved and did battery pull again. Then my opera worked fine after having problems after initial install. Maybe a fluke? I don't know but its worth a try.

AFAIK the error you may be making is having the Pearl connected and/or Desktop Manager open when you are running the EXE file.
Make sure you do NOT have the Pearl connected, nor DM open when running the exe file [the OS].
After running the exe program in Windows, then connect the Pearl.
After the Pearl is connected, then open DM.
It should then automatically prompt to run the upgrade.
If it does not, reboot the PC, then connect the Pearl and open DM, again.
Sidenote: You would think I would remember after just installing the OS on a friend's Pearl just now, but I don't. Anyway, I think as soon as I opened DM it prompted me to do the upgrade. I did NOT open DM and press the application loader.
Bonus comment: You can tell the exe file installed correctly because when you connect the Pearl Windows will say "Found new device" which is a message indicating Windows thinks the Pearl has not been installed before. So if after running the EXE file in Windows you get the "found new device" message, you are good to go on opening DM and proceeding with the install.
Bonus Comment: On the install I did tonight the hourglass lasted about 25 minutes which was a long time. I just watched TV and let it run its course. Eventually it fired up. So be patient.
