Default Advice: "Knife-edge" versus 2nd BES & migrate

Please Login to Remove!

Any advantage to putting up a second BES with a temp SRP, migrating existing users, shutting down the second, and switching the SRP?

My plan is to install on a new server, backup db, switch name/IP, and restore, but I'm curious if the migration approach minimizes the outage.

Thanks in advance.

This depends on what you need to accomplish and how mission critical your BB's are. I have done two knife edge cutovers and one upgrade. They were both quick with less downtime for the the knife edge, but I would only do knife edge if you need to upgrade hardware or you really can't have a half hour of downtime. If you don't, pick a time when BB's are least used and do the upgrade (always backup first!!)

heheheh ... BBAdmin care to chime in?

Doing a migration has some benefits just as you listed ... but "outage-wise" they're effectively the same as the only true outage on a migration is when you replace the SRP and on a knife-edge when you stop / start services; effectively the same thing.

I prefer the knife-edge; just feels cleaner, but each certainly has its merit.

Fortunately, I have two BES servers per org and have had the luxury of good HW so I have just upgraded.

You have a surplus of hardware, dont ya? Care to share?

I'm eventually gonna do the spork-edge cut when I get my DB migrated from MSDE to SQL. Someday. Someday.
