Default VZW 8830 Questions

Please Login to Remove!

So I am starting a new job soon and will be looking to get a VZW 8830. I will be picking it up after I return from my honeymoon to Ireland.

What I would like to know is if there any problems I will encounter upon initial use?

Will I need to immediately load an updated OS to solve any known problems?

Any information would be great. I have been skimming through as much as possible but with the sudden release of so many models since owning my 7290, I can't keep up with what problems are associated with what models, etc. So I figured I would come directly to you guys for assistance!

Thanks in advance!

If you're getting a new one, it should have the latest OS on it already.

I remember when buying my 7290 that the newest OS was out, but wasn't on the BB or the TMO site when I bought it

Verizon released the latest software quite a while ago. It'll be on there. If it's not upgrade it here:

Default Gps

In case you don't already know, the GPS on the VZW 8830 is locked and as such unusable. I think we're gonna have to wait till VZW gives us a paid option to use it.

As far as accessories, I highly recommend a desktop dual-charger (see my other thread), a skin, a car charger, and an extra battery.

You will love this device!

I have had VZW 8830 for 5 days. The OS is current as installed. The customer service has been perfect for my needs. It works perfectly at this point. I have no complaints.

Aside from the Gimped GPS I love my Blackberry 8830 (Wish their was a camera) ... The device is solid, stable and does everything that I need it to do. I wish that I would have switched to blackberry much sooner.

The 8830 is the best cell phone I have used. My wife borrows it because it is easier to hear than her Razr. I like it better than my kids Chocolates. Issues/comments:

1. Blue background on keyboard is hard to see in some lighting.
2. Documentation is poor, but phone is fairly easy to figure out due to logical design.
3. Music and Video work extremely well once you find the tools to convert formats to something Roxio can handle.
4. Battery lasts three days normally unless you are in a dead area. Then you can kill the battery in 16 hours if you don't turn off the radio except when you checking or making a call.
5. Already mentioned GPS issue
6. Ringer is low until you reprogram it.
7. Some microSD cards have to have errors cleaned on a regular computer before it will work in the 8830.
8. It will cost $ 100 a month for the phone bill with minimum minutes and data plan. That is the cost for convenience.
9. SMS messages are limited to 160 characters.
10. I use BIS and I cannot open new Office file attachments such as docx files. At some point this will be resolved but right now it has not been.
11. The phone is extremely stable. I leave it on and only had to pull the battery when I had problems with microSD cards that had errors during first month of ownership.
12. I charge my phone almost everynight.
13. The lastest software update minimized the memory leak issue.
14. I have had no problems with the trackball but keep the phone in it's holster instead of in a shirt or pants pocket to minimize lint pickup.
15. I prefer the full keyboard over the Pearls keyboard.

I think you will enjoy the phone as it is a very well designed compromise.

If you put extra memory in the device "Vzw 8830" can it be accessed with out having to buy extra software?

If I can put music and pics on the extra memory I put will mp3's and other music be playable on the VZW 8830?

Also can I play internet music sites such as sky.fm and such or can I get internet music and not have to pay extra?

Yes you can access it without extra software. You can access it right in Windows through explorer and look at it just like any other drive.

MP3's are available just as long as they are placed in the music folder on the drive.

As for internet music sites I can't answer that as I havent tried it yet. Only had mine for about a week now.
