Default Question to 8820 Owners: Options - Mobile Network

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

This is a question to existing 8820 owners. What lines/options do you see under Options --> Mobile Network?

I have:
---
Data Services: On
Mobile Network: AT&T
---

I read on the WiFi forum that few people had other options related to WiFi, do you have that?

Thanks,
Ix

I have an 8820 and it does not show any WiFi options there. I do have an option to allow me to select the network (manual/automatic). I saw this option (network selection) disappear with one upgrade and then subsequently reappear with another OS upgrade.

My 8320 does have the WiFi options on it, but nothing for the 8820.

Thank you eTHE2, that is what I suspected. I guess the 8320 and 8820 are different in their WiFi implementation then.

I believe they are different even though the 8820's user manual indicates the WiFi options should be there. The 8320 definitely has more manageability for WiFi than the current 8820 OS. One can only hope the 8820 graduates to the 8320 level very soon.

Are the options on the 8320 the ones under the 8820s Manage Connections/Wifi Options? The Menu here has shows the Active Wifi connections, Wifi Selection Mode, Wifi Diagnostics. You can manually setup Wifi connections, etc.

Those features are indeed on both the 8820 and 8320. Setting up/managing WiFi connections/profiles, etc. do appear to be the same. The major difference I have been able to find is the area around controlling the use of the WiFi in the Options>Mobile Network. There is the still this lingering question about whether I am truly using the WiFi or the GPRS/EDGE networks. I truly cannot determine except for the speed the data arrows in the upper right corner and the speed of the content delivery in the browser.

The reason the options show up under Mobile Network on the 8320 but not the 8820 is that the UMA/GAN software is active on the 8320 (T-mobile), but not active on the 8820 (AT&T). T-mobile uses UMA and AT&T does not.

Thanks Jeremy. The 8820 is unlocked running on TMo using an account with UMA H@H on it. While I realise AT&T does not have UMA, there is a setting (certificate, etc.) that is not on the device preventing the option from displaying - regardless of which carrier is being used.

I am not clear as to why UMA/GAN would only include this additional setting. Even if the the device is not using UMA/GAN, I would expect there would be benefit from allowing the user to select which environment (EDGE or WiFI) the device is used. It is still a WiFi device.
