Default "Today" bricks my 8320!

I thought it was just the bPhone Today theme that caused my T-Mobile 8320 to go into an indefinite hourglass mode, forcing a javaloader -u wipe. But the standard factory-supplied Dimension Today theme caused the very same thing. I suspect the IT Policy my company sent down is preventing an aspect of the theme code from accessing the information it needs to make its display, and that it's not catching the error gracefully. Has anyone ever heard of such a problem?
