after trying five times, I had no success, so I Opened Desktop Manager and started to install the OS.

Then the Blackberry Application Wizard erased applications for about 10 minutes, and then started to install applications.
But after about 20 minutes, this message appeared: "Unable to complete the loading operation. Unable to connect to the device during a multi-stage load
operation."

Something I noticed while following instructions:

1) The battery was not in the device when I plugged it into the PC with the USB cable, and the instructions say to plug the device into the PC and then they
say to remove the battery from the device.

2) My SIM card was never in the device through all of the operations, should the SIM card be in the device?

3) If the SIM card is in the device while the Application Wizard is erasing, won't that damage the SIM card?

I would like to start over, but can anyone tell me if the battery and the SIM card should be in the device?

It is a bit past 11 PM (Eastern Time) so I will read this thread tomorrow at 6 AM.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I got the Pearl when I had to replace my BlackJack after 4 returns.. Have to say this was the best choice! I immediately upgraded my OS and have done so 2 more times to the lastest OS and I've not had one bit of trouble other than some freezing of apps but the soft-reset application that someone else recommended is great. I don't recall taking out the battery or the sim card for any of the upgrades. The Sim card does not get wiped out. I have many games and extra tools on my blackberry that I've downloaded and I'm on my phone ALOT! If you go to the sticky threads at the top of the discussions and follow the instructions for the .107 OS you may find it works for you. Good Luck with it!

I would like to put in my 2 cents.
I have had my pearl awhile now. Not sure how many months. I drop it regularly (a least 3 times a week) and have not had any issues with it. Occasionally it says invalid sim after I drop it, but I just pull the battery and continue on down the road. So from my point of view the pearl is a very robust piece of hardware.

I take care of my stuff, yeah it is likely to come across 4 lemons, i did! I guess you could say I'm unlucky, but I'm not careless.

This thread concerns me. Is there a high prevalence among owners of BB Pearls? Also, if you have the insurance on the phone, do you still get a refurb or do they give a new one?

There would be a lot more screaming if this was common. We have over a hundred Pearls and I have never heard of multiple returns..

The 7100 had a lot of returns - people just didn't like it - but the Pearl has been great.

i was just assuming since you can purchase insurance on other phones usually for about $5.99 a month which covers any defects.

Oh I know you can't with AT&T (or at least you couldn't with cingular when I got my Pearl) because they don't offer insurance on smart phones. It may be different for other carriers though.

I didn't realize you couldn't get insurance on smartphones. That stinks.

You still can not - they (AT&T) say it's because it is an "upper end", expensive smartphone - or at least thats what they told me! It doesn't make any sense because they offer insurance on other phones that are a lot more expensive than the pearl!
