Default Password Lock Time

Please Login to Remove!

I am wondering does anybody use this feature? To automatically force a password on the handheld after a certain period of inactivity or when its locked.

What is your time set as?
Why do you use it?
Do your uses hate it?

Welcome to the forums!

We recommend 5-10 minutes to most of our customers.

Thanks! I'm a long time lurker, signed up awhile back, and decided to post! We only have 35 or so BB's, but the nature of the business requires some encryption and extra security.

We enforce the password, but allow the user to set the timeout up to 60 minutes.

I also enforce a password on my personal Blackberry, which is not on a BES, just because.

What length do you suggest for a password? There are compelling reasons to have one, but it seems like a real hindrance to using the BB. I've thought about even using a one digit---haven't checked to see if that is allowed either. But I would be interested in what some experienced users recommend. I'm not on a BES. thanks.

I definately recommend a password - something with a mix of letters and numbers.

You can set it to a max timeout of 60 minutes - that's 60 minutes of inactivity - not locking every 60 minutes.

If your device is lost or stolen and someone puts in the password wrong 10 times all of your data is erased - preventing them from getting at it. Also, without the password they cannot backup your data and restore it to another device (but someone doing that is a little too 'conspiracy theory' to me).

How long a string? I understand the reason, but I would like to minimize the hassle....no one would know the length, so what's wrong with 2 digits? Just looking for experience/suggestions. thanks.

I personally use 30 mins of idle, or automatically upon holstering. I use a 6 digit pw and after the first few times it really isn't as much of a hassle as you would imagine, you just get used to it. I have tons of personal info of clients on the device, and would not want anyone to be able to get the information if my device were to be lost or stolen, it would be very bad for business.

We set a maximum of 60 min. for idle lockout and 5 characters (at least 1 digit) for a password.

you can actual force a password check even if the device isnt idle. i know several govt contractors that have this set to 60 minutes. they also force password lockout after 10 minutes of inactivity and when holstered. really depends on how much security you are looking for.

we have a 10 min lockout, no auto lock on holster, 4 character minimum, and we allow outgoing calls while the device is locked. Except for the 10 min timeout I had full control over the restrictions on the policy. Since this is the first time we started using passwords, I didn't want to piss the people off too badly.

- we enforce it
- set as 5 minutes default but allow user to change up to 60 minute
- 4 character minimum and I usually recommend keeping it at that (especially for pearl users to make it easy to type) nothing complex required
- users didn't like the 5 minutes but seem okay once they up it to something higher
