I recently installed BES 4.1.4 bundle 25, I did not think we would need the MDS so I did not install it.
Now I need it, when I start the setup again, it acts as if its an upgrade and gives me 2 choices of "Upgrade setup type"

Blackberry Enterprise server and components
or
Blackberry Enterprise server with MDS Services and components

If I choose the second option will it install the MDS? or just fail with a component not found error.
How can I get the MDS service on there or am I looking at a remove all and re-install?

Do you need MDS or do you need MDS Services?

What functionality is currently lacking from your environment that you need?

You would choose Option 2 if you truly need MDS Services ... but do you know what MDS Services is?

I'm making an asumption that I need the MDS Services. I work in a Corp IT environment and need to be able to block some of the default icons on the newer blackberrys, i.e shop tunes, shop themes.

With my base install I do not see anywhere in the policies to remove them, I figured I needed to install the MDS services before I can control them.

I'm a new BES Admin so I'm not even sure what that policy would be called and the server is not in production yet so I have nothing to test on.

Glad I asked. You don't need MDS Services for any of these. Look through the BlackBerry IT Policy Reference Guide ... to see what you can / cannot block. MDS Services is responsible for managing communication of behind the firewall applications. IMHO, RIM did a big no no with their naming and it only confuses situations (like this one) ... don't worry, you're not the first to get confused by it (I was too). Check out more on MDS if you'd like.
