Default Tether Speed

Please Login to Remove!

I am going to be purchasing a 8310 Curve from AT&T and before I decide whether to get the data plan with or without the tethering option, I would like to know what type of speed others are experiencing using the tethering. Would the tethering spped be the same as using the browser on the device itself? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can get this info yourself using the search feature. It has been answered many times over.

What speed others get is basically irrelevant to what you might get. Speed is related to several factors, most of which are out of your control. Here are some: the device, the processor, memory, the connection itself, distance to the tower and tower congestion. Also from what I have heard and read, voice always has priority over data. I have not been able to confirm that or not and given that 3G is on most towers, it might not be an issue any longer. Also keep in mind, there are no 3G GSM Blackberries today.

But to answer your question - in general terms anyway:

EDGE speeds average 50-125 kbps with a theoretical max of 384 kbps. My guess is you will see 50-90 kbps most of the time, only a little faster than dial-up. Probably useful for email, but painfully slow for much else.

My Alltel 8330 averages about 1500-1600 kbps when tethering. EVDO is a nice thing...

Has no relevance to this post however, as the OP is on AT&T with EDGE.

I also doubt your 1500 to 1600 kbps speeds too. Typically EVDO is 400 to 800 kbps with a Rev 0 max of 1.2 mbps and Rev A of 2.4 mbps.

What are you using to determine the speed? You might be hitting a proxy too if you are using something like OperaMini. In that case, I think the speed that DSL and others show is the link from the proxy to the web, not from the device to the web.

But if you really are getting that - its great.
