No, you won't be able to do that.
The 8830 will not operate on AT&T's network.

The 8830 is a hybrid CDMA/GSM device and will only work as a GSM device outside of the United States.

The 8830 world edition will ONLY operate on Verizon or Sprint within the U.S.
You can't use it on AT&T or T-Mobile within the US. It doesn't support the GSM frequencies that those carriers use.

Your AT&T SIM card will not work in the 8830 World Edition.

The 8800 branded at AT&T or Cingular will work fine for you.

Be sure to read the FAQ section entitled "Buying a used BB on eBay". Even if you are not getting it there, the information is still the same. You can really get burned and/or have lots of problems if you do not know what you are doing.

The 8830 works on CDMA in US. CDMA is used by both Verizon and Sprint. ATT and T-Mo technology is GSM. The two are not compatible. The 8830's GSM feature is for use outside the US as it utilizes different frequencies that are uses in other parts of the world. That being said, there are still several countries where it will not work - especially Japan. Probably more than you wanted to know however.
