I have a Pearl 8100 with the unlimited data plan from AT&T. I would like to use it as a wireless modem for my laptop, and have been pounding my head against a brick wall attempting to get it to work.

My 1st question: does AT&T support tethering through the Pearl - either with the unlimited data plan or some other option? If some other option, forget it - I'm not paying them any more $.

If they do support it with the unlimited option, what do I have to do to make the confounded thing work?

Windows seems to see the modem as working. Hardware flow control disabled, etc. I can get my laptop to dial out, but usually get a 718 PPP error ("Server failed to respond in a timely manner").

I've tried both AT&T {+cgdcont=1,"IP","proxy" : .........Username: (blank) .........Password: (blank)} and Cingular {+cgdcont=1,"IP","ISP.CINGULAR" : .........Username: .........Password: CINGULAR1} settings, but no go.

What gives?

Do a search on tether. Also read the FAQ. You will need a BB tether plan from ATT.

So the tether plan is different / additional than unlimited data plan for BB?

I've already done tons of searchs on tether.

call att ccare and add the tethering plan
Bbconnect plan does not cover you for tethering, however it will work without.but they will charge you for the usage, so add the plan

I suppose that's better than th $60/month they want to charge for an AirCard.

I teather my laptop with my 8100 on ATT. They tack on $20.00 a month on top of BB Unlimited plan to do this.

I tether my 8130 to my laptop on Sprint. I downloaded a program called connection manager and all I have to do is click on "GO" and it connects using bluetooth. I can also plug the BB in with USB but the connection seems faster with bluetooth. Sprint doesn't charge extra for tethering. I know Verizon charges $15.00 per month extra for tethering.
