I just bought my first blackberry 8130 Pearl, and it works great! First off I did not get the Blackberry package with the internet plan, but the guy at best buy told me that you can hack the phone and pretty much do anything with these. So, I have a wifi spot at my house that I use for my computer, and I tried to use it for the phone, but I run into problems. When I go to the browser, it says

"Your device does not currently have any Browser Configuration Service Book Entries. Please contact your service provider to enable the browser on your device."

So can I just download a browser online? Also, when I try to move files on to my Blackberry with the cd program, and I do use a .ali and alx file, it says

"No additional applications designed for you device were found"

Bottom line, you can't 'hack it'. If you still believe so, then your BestBuy dude needs to come show us how... Good luck.

The guy at Best Buy should be slapped. Hard. The 8130 does not have WiFi, and you cannot hack it (as JSanders already stated).

Seriously, I'd go back to his manager and complain. Not that he can do anything abou the features, but that sales person should be reprimanded.

Hacking aside... if they sold it to you under the guise that it had WiFi and you could connect to your home wireless network... they flat out lied to you. Hopefully it's not a feature you need or was a deciding factor in your purchase.

I agree people who will say anything to make a sale should be banned from retail. I would go back to Best Buy and complain to him supervisor then the Store manager. If they didnt listen I would go on up the ladder.

The BB is the most unhackable phone, thats why the feds use them.

No, the WiFi was not a huge deciding factor, it was just something I thought was cool on the phone. So, I guess downloading the oprea browser would just be a waste of time then.

Just curious - Is there a reason you didn't opt for the BlackBerry plan? I'm not familiar with the 'internet' plan, but you can get a $30 BlackBerry plan (for personal use only - can't connect to a company BlackBerry server) that includes unlimited data, text, email, GPS navigation, TV, and Radio).

Ya, but right now I'm under a family plan, and I'm just using the basics, of voice and texting. Why pay the extra $30/ month when I have internet at home. I got the phone for $50 anyways with a 2 year plan. The WiFi/Internet part would have just been something to do when I was no home and board.

Haha. Best buy. Let me tell you a short story about them. A friend of mine bought a plasma screen TV with an extended warranty and took it to the house they were moving too and in a few days when they took it out of the box they noticed the back screen was shattered. So she called best buy and they basically called her a liar and said she did it even though the box was fine and the outer screen was fine. So she called corporate expecting an apology and a replacement, but no. They did the same and called her a liar and that there is nothing they can do.

So this story of the guy lying to you seems to be a new best buy policy....

The essence of a Blackberry is the data plan. I bought a 8130 with the understanding from the CSR (OK so maybe I'm delusional) that i could go back to a standard plan if I didn't like it. I've gotten to where I would much rather use the 8130 for e-mail and internet vs the home computer. Anywhere, anytime, and no 5 minute startup. Try the plan, you'll never go back!
