This is because your OS is not at the 4.2 level. Right now BByMel is working on making 1.6x run on 4.1 and below, but it is tricky.
I am guessing he will get it soon, but in the mean time you could install 1.5 (or below). Or, if your carrier offers the 4.2 OS for your 7290 you could install that.

Any thoughts? Was this new update not for older BB's?

More problems with 8800
OK - if I'm a moron, I'm sorry. I've searched the forum for over an hour, and can't find the answer to my question.
I have a VZW 8800, downloaded 1.6 OTA two days ago, used registration key from Handango. Using the latest OS from VZW that I upgraded 4.2.2.176. Have tried several battery resets. Every time I change the options, I get the Java uncaught exception error.
Am I supposed to be using a different version? I really want this to work, and I'll dink with it if I have to, I just need some direction!!!!
Thanks!

Your profile says 8830 but you say 8800 up above; the latest OS for the 8800 is 4.2.1.xxx, I am not sure on the 4.2.2.xxx so I guess 8800 was a typo.
I am not sure how much testing was done for the 4.2.2.xxx OS's; but the tried and true BBAlerts version for OS 4.2.1.xxx is v1.49. v1.60 isn't official.
I would give that a try first.

what's wrong with the SMS notification on the 8130? Mine works fine... which version of BBAlerts are you running? I run v1.60 and it has always worked for me.

FYI, there is a new unofficial version of BBAlerts available OTA from BByMel's site, v1.61. It seems to add the ability to filter which emails give you the alert (which implies that you don't get alerted for the ones you don't want to be notified of).
So, if you want to be alerted about critical server messages but not alerted about spam emails or daily batch server messages, it's now possible. I think it doesn't support wildcard addresses (but didn't test to see if it does or doesn't), so it might be a bit of typing to get the filter addresses in but that's a one-time thing.
Again, it's not an officially supported release, try at your own risk. Works fine on my 8800. (FYI, I always get one uncaught java exception error or somesuch when I install a new version but it only happens ONCE, so don't freak out, hehe).

Been using 1.61 for a few days and I love it! The ability to filter the e-mails that get alerted is fantastic! Highly recommended... It also has the ability to notify of calender events....
Beware that This version only works on 4.2.2 or 4.3 right now.

Good question, but I don't think he has one. AFAIK, these test versions are only OTA.

Works fine so far on my 8800 (4.2.1.107)
Glad to see calendar reminders added. I'd love to be able to assign different colors based on which mailbox I receive messages in, as well, but I'll mess with filters and see what they offer.

I searched and it didn't appear that this had been discussed anywhere. If I remember correctly, in 1.6 the "mark calls as read/opened" option had disappeared, and there was no way to stop this from happening (I prefer them left "unread"). Can anyone confirm whether this option is back in 1.61?

Fair enough - I hope I didn't sound like I was arguing, just sharing my experience. I know this app has had a wide spectrum of successful operations vs. different issues based on device and OS - shoot, just look at the size of this thread!
I'm just happy it's working for me.

Hmmm... that does not ring any bells for me at all. Sounds more like a Pocket Day thing than BB Alerts thing, hehe.
Do you mean mark calls as read/open when you see the popup notification log?

Just installed 1.61 on my 8830 4.2.2.176 and I'm getting a java lang exception every time I save a settings change. I have removed and reinstalled, battery pull, etc...
I also get no alerts, at least for SMS (all i tested so far)...
ideas?
NorCal, i see you have an 8830 listed, is 1.61 working for you?
*edit* my alerts do work...
