I have a pearl with tmobile, it got wet and it doesn't turn on. It lights up but the phone won't turn on. I bought the pearl about a month ago and don't feel like spending money on a brand new phone. What can I tell or do to receive a new phone from blackberry warranty and not have them notice that it got wet.

well if you hadnt put the battery back in and tried to turn it on you might have saved it but now its too late and they will def know.

They will know. The large majority of phones are outfitted with small stickers internally (or something similar) that changes color or pattern when it gets wet, and will stay that way after drying.

The first thing to do if something gets wet is take out the battery and let the whole thing dry out. If you do that, there's a better chance that the product will still work. Trying to turn it on while it's still wet just kills it.

It is EASY to resurrect a water-doused BlackBerry with almost guaranteed success:
Generally, 90% of the time a briefly wet blackberry works again (after drying) if you immediately GRAB THE BATTERY OUT OF THE BLACKBERRY in a hurry. It's a cellphone repairman's secret - I've made some money buying dead blackberries to resurrect them.

Water + no battery = almost harmless to BlackBerry

Water + electricified battery = ZAP!

It's not water that instantly damages BlackBerries, but water+electricity. However, if you already tried to test the BlackBerry, remove the battery immediately and open up the BlackBerry to dry the water out - at least remove the plastic casing of the BlackBerry only, don't need to fully disassemble if you really don't want to. Cross your fingers. Your odds are now only 25-50%, odds rapidly falling lower the longer you leave the battery in.

High School Chemistry 101 Explanation
The circuit boards inside a BlackBerry are just mostly plastic parts with metal traces. Water ain't going to hurt that quickly, especially if it is not salt/pool water. However, water on the metal parts with electricity is going to cause corrosion quickly. Remember ions, electroplating, electrolytes, accelerated rusting via electricity, etc from your High School Chemistry class? Bingo. REMOVE THE BATTERY FROM A WET CELLPHONE IMMEDIATELY!

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO "TEST" A STILL-DAMP BLACKBERRY!
(Even if dry outside, it's still wet inside. It takes approx 3-5 days for a BlackBerry to become dry under a heat lamp)

My previous device got wet and it wouldnt work so I put it under a hairdryer, took it apart and managed to get it working. Sadly what happened is after a while some parts had rust and this eventually killed the device. Do you have insurance with Assurion? If you do then just say its lost. If not good luck

And why wouldn't they be. Any company in their right mind would be. Water damage is something that is VERY VERY common. Do you know how much money ANY companies would lose if they werent rigid and basically just allowed anyone to turn in a wet device to get a new one???

Their rigidity is fully understandable. NOT being so rigid is idiotic and bad business sense.

Exactly. My 12 year old put his cell phone through the washer in his pants pocket. I got him a new (refurbished) one. He did it again. Now he's using the second water-damaged phone with a messed-up screen. It still dials and receives though! Lesson learned.

Yup. Its just silly to expect a company to keep replacing phones because of water damage. Yet, lots of people think the whole wet sticker thing is excessive. Without it, they would be taken advantage of left and right. The alternative would be to increase prices overall to make up for all the money lost in wet devices, so these stickers keep the prices low.

I dropped my old 8700 completely in a puddle. It was SOS until I took the battery out and used a hair dryer on it for 1.5 hrs. After that it would boot, but the keys would stick. Dried out the keys with a dryer. After that it was almost back to 100% aside from the S button, which would still stick. Pretty durable.
