Default Stolen BB security issues

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,
Last night my company blackberry was stolen. It was password protected (not with the default). Within around 15 minutes of my bag being taken I called my blackberry and it had been turned off / battery removed. I understand it is unlikely they will be able to access my Inbox without my password but will they be able to unlock the blackberry use another SIM and be able to access my third party applications? Specifically my gmail mail box used to be accessible from the bb without entering a password - I have since changed the password. Also Google Maps saves previous searches made, I am apprehensive about this because my house keys were in the same bag and I don't want the thieves to work out where I live.

Any help appreciated

Did you call your carrier and your company? You (or the company) are liable for all charges up until you tell the carrier. Not like a credit card. The carrier can suspend all service so it is useless and if you are on BES, I think the company can do something as well, depending on how it is set and if it is one.

Yes - if you are on BES you should call the BES Admin as soon as possible and ask them to issue a remote wipe on the handheld.

Your warning about Google Maps and your house keys is a useful one. I have read recommendations that for personal navigation devices like the TomTom that you should set your 'Home' address to be somewhere close to your home, rather than the house itself. There was a story of someone in the UK whose sat nav was stolen with their car which had keys in it; the thieves then navigated to the victim's house and used the keys.

Not to worry you though - I doubt many thieves are that smart. And, if you are on BES as has been said above your admin can remotely wipe the device.
