Symbol shortcuts

In Stinsonddogs tips, it says that when you hold down a letter and roll the trackball, you get the symbol associated with that key. Are those supposed to be the symbols you see from the symbol key?
One of the examples he used was using the C to get ©. When I roll on the C, I get nothing. Some letters give symbols, but they're foreign language symbols, not the ones from the symbol table.
Is this just me or do I have a problem here? How can I find how the keys are mapped and can it be changed?

I have not seen a keymapping chart, but that as you stated works for me, and always has on like 4 BBs. I know it works on the 8320 as well.
In a text box, like an email, press the C key and roll the trackball. You'll get several choices as your scroll...c, C, © and Ç.
What do you have your Language Input set as: Options > Screen/Keyboard?

I have an 8310 on AT&T, the letter C+trackball scroll works for me (c, C, © and Ç) if I am composing an email, memo pad document, PIN, or an MMS, but not if I am composing an SMS. On an SMS, it only gives me the C, c, and Ç. I am running United States English as my input language for all of the above apps, and I do not have any other language support loaded. Perhaps SMS doesn't support certain characters?

I did a battery pull, and it didn't make a difference.
Any suggestions?

Answer what language input you have? Compare apples to apples with Jet.
OS loaded?

I am running OS 4.2.2.170, for comparison.
This may be a stupid question, but are you rolling the ball left and right, or up and down? If I go up and down (or anything that varies too far from left and right) I only get the funky C, or nothing at all.

BINGO! Well, stupid is as stupid does. This proves it. I was rolling up and down. "Obviously", left and right is the PROPER way.
OK, different question is where can I find the mapping for this?
Is there a shortcut for the symbols from the Symbol table (Symbol key)?
Just for reference, I'm running 4.2.2.170, language is U.S. English.
THANKS!

The shortcut for the Symbols is the symbol key, that would be at theh bottom right, next to the space key.
I have never seen a mapping of the alternate characters mentioned above.
Somebody make one and I will post it on the FAQ site.

Ummmm ... Ya'll mean that big, giant key with the SYM on it? Check.
If you let me know the preferred format for the mapping, I think I could manage to do it. ![Wink](http://www.blackberryforums.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

No, the Symbol character map is different. Notice there is no copyright symbol over the C. I searched, and the best I could find on RIM's resources is that you can press a key and scroll the wheel/trackball for 'special and accented' characters. I did notice a correlation of sorts while tinkering: C gives the copyright mark, T does trademark, R registered, etc. Any letter that would have a ^, ~, umlaut, or other accent mark uses that corresponding letter, of course.
Symbol map attached.

Right. When I originally saw the tip, I thought it was a shortcut to the characters in the table.

Accentuated character input
I have been looking to save the address "Lempäälä" in Finland for the last 2 hours now. The pressing of a letter then scrolling the trackball left/right was not immediately obvious to me by interrogating the handset (i.e go to symbols and expecting more than 1 page).
It's easy when you know how, and now I do.
Many Thanks

It would be real useful to post the symbol chart for everyone, if anyone can find it.

Wirelessly posted (Curve 8330)
Yeah, that would be sweet. Anyone tried googling it?
