Default Anyone syncing 8100/8130 via Bluetooth?

Please Login to Remove!

I've done some searching, and haven't been able to find much in terms of folks having success syncing Outlook calendar/contact/tasks to/from the Pearl using Bluetooth.

Is anyone out there having success doing this? Particularly interested in the 8130 & BT sync, as that's what I'm planning on getting as soon as my NE2 is available.

This doesn't really answer your question but what is your reason for wanting to bluetooth sync? Bluetooth sync is considerably slower than USB and much trickier to set up. It's a great backup if your USB port breaks (which has happened on BB's) but other than that I've never seen the need.

Thanks for your reply, John...

I'd like sync to happen while I'm sitting there w/the phone in my pocket in front of my laptop, rather than having to take the Pearl out, connect it, sync, disconnect, put it back in my pocket, etc. Just like the ability to take advantage of wireless when possible...I have a wireless network, print wirelessly via BT and my LAN, & want the phone to do the same.

A friend had a Sony Ericsson phone a couple of years ago that did this and it seemed like a very nice feature...

I get that it will be slower, particularly initially, but once I have completed initial sync (which I'd probably want to do via USB), I would expect that daily BT updates would go fast enough for me...I'm in front of my laptop for hours on phone meetings so I have plenty of time for sync to complete.

I sync my 8100 with my Outlook calendar and contacts daily using BT. It has worked flawlessly for me and the entire sync is done in 15-20 seconds.

Now doing backups over BT takes significantly longer, on the magnitude of 3-4 minutes for me, depending on how much is on your phone. But, this has also worked very well for me.

I'm not sure what John is eluding to when he says:

I'll agree it is slower, but trickier to set up? Once your phone is linked via BT to your PC, the sync is exactly the same as if it were connected via USB. Granted, it takes a bit of effort to link your phone to your PC via BT, but I wouldn't consider it difficult by any means.

Thanks, Camaro...good to hear about the speed, that's what I hoped.

Did you have to uninstall your PC's existing BT stack to use the XP SP2 BT drivers? My laptop (HP) does not use the XP SP2 drivers, so that's the main complexity I'm facing, as far as I can tell..

I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to, but I'm pretty sure the answer is no, since I never did anything that complex.

All I did was install the drivers for my Belkin BT dongle, and then I was able to link my 8100 with my PC using the Windows Bluetooth Devices window. I am running XP SP2 on a Toshiba laptop (home) and Dell laptop (work).

Hope that helps....

I have an HP laptop as well and I had to edit the bth.inf file in Windows to include the device ID for the HP bluetooth module. Then I unistalled the HP drivers and pointed to the bth.inf file and now it says that it's a Microsoft BT device.

That's what I've heard...thanks for confirming.

How did you get the info to edit the bth.inf file (the device ID for the HP bluetooth module)?

Did you lose any noticeable BT functionality by removing the HP BT drivers.

You can find the Device ID from the driver details in the windows device manager. Here's what I had to add:

[Manufacturer]
WIDCOMM=WIDCOMM, NTx86.5.1

[WIDCOMM.NTx86.5.1]
%BROADCOM2045HP.DeviceDesc%=BthUsb, USB\VID_03F0&PID_171D ; BROADCOM VId&PID for Hp

[Strings]
BROADCOM2045HP.DeviceDesc="HP Internal Bluetooth Module"

Corey...I finally got "brave" and followed your instructions and am now happily BT syncing. Just wanted to give you a belated thank-you...having the entries that you provided available made it very easy, once I decided to try it! Lucky we had the same manuf. laptop/internal BT device.

See my post at the end of this thread, and read the link that it references.

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...bluetooth.html

This isn't a simple process, depending on what Bluetooth drivers are already installed on your PC, and I can't help you any more than to point you at what I did....worked "easily" for me as I have the same computer type as "mckinneycm" above (Corey) and was able to leverage the info he provided.

This was on XP, so I can't tell you if this will work on Vista at all...sorry I can't help more.

There's also this short thread:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ync-vista.html

You'll likely need to do some searching/reading across these forums...

This is a variation for owners of newer Dell laptop owners.
If anyone is trying to get a dell with XP SP2 to sync with the blackberry software, here is an easy solution that worked for me.
First go to Start, RUN and type in c:/windows/inf/
In this folder look for a file named bth.bak
Change the name to bth.inf
Now open that file in note pad and hit control "F" to search for a reference to "BCM2033". When you find it, change it to BCM2045 and save the file.
This is the Broadcom bluetooth chip in newer Dell computers.

That should do it.
Now just go to add/remove programs and uninstall the Widcomm bluetooth driver. when you restart your computer, turn on your bluetooth service and the windows bluetooth stack should instal.

Worked perfect for me.
Fixed the bluetooth sync option being grayed out and sync works perfectly via bluetooth. Much faster then I expected too.

Note: Don't ask me any questions. I am not an expert, I just pieced this together from several posts I found on the internet. I hope this helps other dell laptop owners.

Once you get the bluetooth sync established, how do you initiate the sync process? With a USB cable, the BB software pops up and starts syncing. How do you start this same process over bluetooth?

As noted. You launch DM and a dialog appears asking if you want to connect to your BB via BT.

I have been syncing to my Outlook with the bberry desktop software via bluetooth for some time now. It set up effortlessly the first time, and the actual sync time is around 20 seconds. It is pretty convenient to just launch the desktop software while at my laptop and have it sync right to my bberry on my belt.

If you are BES, nothing seems to work unless your admin allows it!! :(

Ok for those of you syncing by BT do you use password protection? By that I mean when the DM recognizes you are wanting to sync do you have to put in the password just like with the USB cable. Because if I have to do that I might as well sit down at the PC and hook it up to the USB
