There is no GPS on the 8100. And if you have no data plan, none of the mapping programs will work anyway.

Some people have a hard time getting them to work. Do a serach on GPS Puck for more info.

Buy a Bluetooth GPS receiver and pair it with your Blackberry.
(Something like the GlobalSat BT-359)

There's several good ones out there. They run around $50-$100 depending on the model you get.

the new google maps is pretty cool, not exactly gps, but it comes close, no hardware purchase necessary.
It utilizes the cell towers to triangulate your position, kinda neat.

No, you don't need BES. A regular BIS data plan will work fine.

Tower triangulation is pretty simple actually.
The BlackBerry device knows the towers around it. I has to know in order to function.
Google Maps uses the triangulation data to display an approximation of your location on a map.

I've seen the new google maps be very close to my actual location and I've seen it be very far from my actual location using the triangulation.
