Default BES and Websense!!!

Please Login to Remove!

Good afternoon everyone,

I searched through quite a bit of the site and have yet to find the problem I am having.

We are using a BES server with Websense as our filtering software. As of last week everything was fine until we upgraded our BES server to Enterprise. Now it seems that Websense has taken control over all the Blackberry's in the company. Our employees pay for their own Blackberry's so what they look at on them is up to them and we dont want to control it.

So is there a setting that we are overlooking to tell our Enterprise server not to filter the Blackberrys.

Thanks and any comments suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi mcmav101
When you setup the BES, did you enter the proxy setting? If so, then all browsing requests from the handhelds will be directed through the proxy (in this case WebSense).
Make sure that the proxy is turned off in BB Manager, and verify that the server itself can browse the internet without the requirement for the proxy.

No we did not configure a proxy while setting up the BES server.

Not real sure what you mean by taking over their BlackBerry. Nothing can take over their BlackBerry. What functionality have they lost in particular. I know that a WebSense server can cause browsing issues because it adds info into the header causing it to be too large I think.

Here is RIM's article on that:

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/searc...200%2042850147

Review that as some changes need to be made on the Websense server if that's the case.

If you are experiencing something else then please explain.

Thanks for the answers here,

Well an example is this. From our company PC's we recently blocked shopping sites as it was eating up alot of bandwidth. So now that we have blocked shopping sites on company computers when someone tries to browse to lets say ebay.com they are getting a blocked by websense in the shopping category on their blackberry as well as from their company computers. We do not want them to be able to get to ebay.com on their computers but from their blackberry that is fine.

Browsing from the BB Browser is like browinsg from the BES itself, the BES has to be able to browse to that site to make it work on the BB. You can try to configure the proxy on the BES to allow ebay.com or maybe allow the BES PC to get out if that's possible.

That's all I can think of to make it work. Keep that article handy in case your BB users start getting that HTTP error on their device as well.

Can't you exempt the BES' IP from filtering by Websense. We use Barracuda here and that is one option we are looking at.

Did you remove the standard browser through an it policy? if so, you are forcing browsing through the bes.
