Default HELP: Losing Memory

Please Login to Remove!

I just now discovered my messages had been randomly deleted and my free memory space said 0. I pulled out the battery and restarted and I got 8 mb back. I checked under Options and my external memory card had 1.8gb of free space. How do I transfer all my pictures and stuff into my memory? I mean when I pull the pictures out, they're coming out of the Media Card folder...I don't get it...

Read the link above. There is a big difference between your device memory and your SDCard.

I had this same problem on the Pearl, almost all of my messages, except the saved ones, would be deleted, my call log would be deleted, etc. etc..

I'm pretty sure it was Viigo (it's an RSS feed reader), I had it downloading a lot and it would delete it by itself, but my phone would not reflect that until I did a hard reset, and I was too lazy to check my memory or reset it often because it would happen every 10-20 days or so. I never figured out a solution for it though.

I would check to see if you had any programs like that running (maybe something else that downloads and deletes often?) because if it is that, then freeing up more memory will only make it take longer for this to happen again. Although another issue could be if you did some uninstalls and the memory just reflected 8 MB because you didn't restart since then, but it just seems like 8 MB popping up after a restart is a whole lot...

You need to also make sure that you do not have software on your device that you do not use. Even the OEM software has stuff you do not need/use. A lean device works the very best!

I have some strange problem... Something similar. Some days I have 21 megs free, and others I have 16... I followed the how to optimize you're blackberry memory guide, and I did free up a lot, but still. I don't know where these megs are going! these are the applications I have installed:
(besides blackberry core and system software)
BB messenger
BrickBreaker
Browser
Calendar OTA Patcher
Facebook
GoogleMail
GoogleMaps
GoogleSync
Help
Jivetalk
MemoPad
Phone (obviously )
sms2mail
Today+

That's it! as you can see all I have are some Google things and Jivetalk! And I just did a hard reset and it's at 18! arggg... No idea!!!! Any ideas? I love memory!!!

do you use the app switcher often? if so then that's part of the reason why you're losing memory

hardly ever (I always use the two soft keys, end and call buttons). And a hard reset cleans it up. But it doesn't with me!

RIM says that between 20-25 switches will cause a memory leak! They officially said it.

end and call buttons? i don't think they'd actually close out an app; you shouldn't leave a lot of programs running in the background too

the application switch is much like the alt-tab (windows) and command-tab (mac); for our BBs, you have two options:

1. press and hold ALT, press the ESC key then use your trackball to cycle through the apps (highlight the app you wish to open and release the ALT key)

2. set up either your left or right convenience keys to be the app switcher; you can do it right off Options under Screen/Keyboard

I don't. hehe. If I need to get to the messages menu while in JT, I just hit the end button and read the messages, and press the soft button to get back into JiveTalk and I'm back in the game! I never leave unnecessary apps open . Always closing.

First I've read about losing memory with the app switcher - I use it all the time. Will cease that practice; thanks for the heads-up

Thanks, I already followed the link above to free up the memory. It did free up a lot, now I'm just wondering how I can make sure that my external card is being used? I set up all my pics and etc to be stored on the card, but whenever I check under Options, it still says it's got 1.8gb free space.

I don't use the application switcher at all...so I don't think that it could've caused me to lose memory so quickly?

The Facebook icon is annoying too since the app has been uninstalled...

juicy, you need to read what we are writing here... Post #14 has nothing to do with instructions to free up memory. You asked "how can i check what's open and what's not?" and using the application switch will tell you that.

To confirm that your pictures are on the external memory card, look at it from your PC with Mass Storage enabled on the Media Card.
How do I add media files to my microSD card? - BlackBerryFAQ.com

For the Facebook icon, simply highlight over it, press Menu and HIDE.

Good luck.
