New 8830 coming.
Please Login to Remove!
I just found out that I will be doing international travel and my company has ordered a new Sprint/BB 8830. I currently have a Treo 650, which will be replaced with the 8830. I will find and download the manual, but wanted to know if 3rd party software is available. I am currently using a backup software that backs up my contacts and basically all the phone info to the SD memory card. I also use Butler and Phone Technician which are a collection of different utilities. Are these kinds of things available for the 8830? If so, where is a good source for them?

Welcome to the forums. I'm not familiar with Butler and Phone Technician. However, the backup to SD card is not yet available on the BB. There are 3rd party apps for the BB but not as many as for Palm. That is slowly changing, though.

Welcome to the forums!
There are a host of different third-party applications available for the BlackBerry, although I don't know if those specific applications are available. Right now there is a way to backup your BlackBerry's information via the Desktop Manager application, but it doesn't backup directly to the memory card at this point. It is an offline file that can be later restored using the Desktop Manager.
I believe there will be an OS update (at some point in time) that will allow this functionality of backing up to the memory card, but it isn't available right now.

different colors of the same model are generally the same. The original shipment may have a different OS before the stores sell through the original color to get a new shipment in. This in no way indicated OS 4.3, just saying it might be 4.2.2.001 to 4.2.2.003

Is there a site or place where third party software can be found? Also, what else should I know? That is, how would you finish this, "I wish I had done ____ when I first got my 8830, or I wish I had known about ____.

So do we know if, in fact, the Red 8830 is running the same OS as the Pearl for Verizon? Specifically, I'm referring to the UI and font updates found in the Pearl. Or, is the red one identical in all aspects to the silver 8830 except for the exterior color?

Why Red??
What the heck were they thinking?? I wish I could get the black one going on the Verizon network. I have the silver one... and that one is a little too bright for me. The red one... well let's not go there!

i'd say there are very few phones that look good in colours other than black and silver
the main exception i can think of at the moment is the SE M600i in white, which i think looks great.

BillyBobby; welcome again to the forums.
Since your company is setting you up on the BB 8830 > most likely you'll need to acquire a SIM card for roaming when you get to overseas; and also inquire if they already have a Blackberry Enterprise Server installed and setup. If so then no need to worry as the Admin for the BES should be able to (and most likely already has) setup Wireless Backup. Just inquire if 3rd party applications & their settings are also backed up as well. I mention this as you stated your company already ordered you your 8830.
Safe travels and enjoy your new 8830 World Edition Blackberry.

BB Desktop Manager has a backup feature so you can backup to your desktop. Seems to me there are plenty of 3rd party apps out there. Start with the Aftermarket Software forum on this site. I use Empower Pro for HTML mail viewing and BeamBerry for attachment viewing. Lots of good apps out there.

Plenty of places for you to get a black oem housing for your 8830. I just bought one from another bbf member, installed yesterday, looks awesome. You can try cnn.cn, ebay or a number of other bb online parts sites. I had the silver for 6 months, couldn't stand the lousy keyboard backlighting, finally bought the full black kit and love it.

If you're looking for aftermarket software, look no further than the Aftermarket Software Forum right here at BBForums. It's searchable so you can glean all kinds of info!

From what I remember of my Treo days, there are some BB third-party apps that are the equivalent to Butler. There's Blackberry Alerts which is a good reminder/nag manager. The BB natively can use mp3's as ringtones so no need for a ringtone manager. There are at least two alarm managers that I'm aware of for the BB to satisfy your alarm craving, My Alarm and MobyAlarm (I think that's the name of it), as well as the native Alarm app.
As far as Phone Technician goes, there are native tools under Options on your BB to set the on/off times for your phone and/or wireless radio.
That's about all I remember of those two utilities. Hope this helps!
Cheers!

Another place for software is Handango.com.
Also, make sure you read the FAQ and Stinsondog's BB tips.
