Question Voice dialing problems on 8310

Please Login to Remove!

I have a Curve 8310 with about 3,100 contacts in the address book. Before I synched with Outlook, I had about 50 contacts in the address book. With 50, voice dialing worked great. With 3,100, it is awful. It almost never gets it right now. I say, call "Starbucks" and it may say "Keith" or "Julie". Weird. Any ideas on why this is so?

I loved the voice dial feature before this. Now I can't and won't use it.

Thanks!

The voice dialer is rather a simple piece of software that does not even required voice traning.

From what you have said, I would think that you are asking a bit much to ask this simple software to find 1 out of 3100 contacts to dial for you.

If it worked with 50 contacts and did not with 3100, that kind of answers your question!

Quantity of contacts shouldn't make a difference. If the Curve can recognize "Call Ted", why can't it still do that with a larger database? It can't even repeat the correct name to me anymore. I could understand if the database overwhelmed its search ability, but it shouldn't affect how it hears you.

I guess I"ll contact RIM and see what they can tell me. What's the best way to reach customer support?

I would NOT agree. Just from your original post, it is pretty well indicating that this simple software CAN find a contact when lloking thru 50 but is alot harder when looking at 3100!

I takes no engineer to figure that out!

I have a similar problem but worse I think... my voice dial never did work properly and I only have about 75-100 contacts. When I say call "Dad" it will start naming off a small 2-4 name list saying "did you say call", and someone else's name that doesn't even sound like Dad. Any ideas / suggestions ?

I have 1300 contacts and it works beautifully. It is something else. When I first set up, for a while it would get nothing right, I wiped the BB and started again, and voila, it works great. Something happens I don't know what, I thought it was the theme I was using, because when I changed themes is when it started not to hit the contact list properly, it just never found a match. I wiped changed themes and it worked. But then I went back to the theme I wanted but thought didn't work, and it still works, so I have no idea why it got screwed, but it did get fixed.

I've tried it on both my old 8830 and my 8310 and have never had good luck with it. I have about 400 contacts and it just doesn't work. I just think it's not sophisticated enough to work well and have disabled it.

I logged into Voice Signal's website (the company that makes the voice recognition software for the Curve) and found a post from a tech to a user that had over 4,000 contacts that said that the software has memory limitations. It can handle 3,000 contacts, but that is the limit. He recommended placing the 3,000 most needed contacts in one folder to be synched with the Blackberry and all 4,000 in another folder to be kept on the desktop.

I'm going to try it sometime this week and post what I found out. Either RIM needs to add more memory or something. I imagine that there are multiple users that need that capability. That was a factor in my buying the phone. The more contacts you have the more the need for VR. Just griping.

Well, under Options go to voice dialing and check sensitivity to 3(Reject More) and that should solve your problems.
I was having the same problem and it took me a little while to figure that out but now it works perfect, it recognizes every single name on my phone book. Good luck.

I've always had a hard time getting the voice dialing to properly recognize my contact names (I only have 86 contacts).

I've adjusted the sensitivity which did nothing. I can ask to call Donna and the phone will reply, call Kevin.

Is there a way to set up specific voice dial commands for particular people? I have some friends who have non-american names and the voice command prompt seems useless for them.

Default Solution

I did the following:

Under Options>Voice Dialing: Turn sensitivity down to -3
Hit the menu key and select "adapt digits"
Always say "call" before you speak.

Now it works every time. I have about 1000 contacts.
