Angry About to move my MSDE DB to SQL 2005

Please Login to Remove!

I have a question.
Tonight we plan to move our BES 4.10 DB from local MSDE onto a shared SQL Server.
Our SQL DBA who is going to be DB Backup and Restore seems to think all I should need to do is stop the blackberry services, run a backup, and then restore the DB to the new SQL Server. After this has been done I can repoint the BES Server to the new DB and start the services.
I have read a few articles posted on this site where people mention that I need to run createdb.exe on the SQL server before this. Or run the Blackberry Server Configuration tool which does the same.
My DBA said I shouldnt need to do this as when he restores the DB this will overwrite what is already been created.
My question is why and do I need to run the createdb tool??

Many thanks in advance
Ben

Hy,

iŽll never done it, but i think you shoul`d youse the .exe because it creates the empty db with the right permissions and options. After that fire up the sql 2005 admin gui and restore the backup to the new empty db created with the .exe.

You need to run createdb to create the requisite entries in the master database on the SQL server.

Read these:

KB12247 - How to move from an MSDE database to a Microsoft SQL Server database
and
KB03112 - How to move the BlackBerry Configuration Database to a new Microsoft SQL Server or instance

And then print them out and follow the instructions step-by-step. Not doing this will most likely end up causing you problems ... I've done hundreds of these and I still print out the steps to make sure I don't miss anything.

Thanks for all your help, the DBA finally agreed to doing it the correct way and lo and behold lots of extra things were created, scheduled tasks etc. More than just the DB anyway!
It all went succesfully and I am now running on a shared SQL server.
Cheers
