Hardware anti-spam solution with Exchange/BES setup

Hey all,
I have a customer that I'm dealing with through the company I work for and I'm trying to figure out exactly what's going on here. He's telling me that he has our hardware parameter security unit sitting in front of his Exchange server, then he has his BES and then his Blackberry device(s).
He tells me that his Exchange does not receive spam because the hardware solution stops it; however, his Blackberry devices are still receiving spam. Is there any other way that this spam can slip through to the blackberry device and not go through the anti-spam?
I understand that with software anti-spam solutions, you can setup a ProcessMailDelay for about 45 seconds so that the anti-spam software has enough time to pick up the message before BES pushes it to its devices. However, this is a hardware solution and the spam is being stopped at the unit before it reaches Exchange server.
I don't have much information from the customer himself but until then, just wanted to see what you guys think about this. Thanks!
