Default How To: Set Up Apache Webserver For OTA Downloads

Please Login to Remove!

This is a question getting asked more and more frequently here, so I made a guide.

For Apache Webservers - The Easy Way.

By default, the apache webserver does not understand what files with .jad and .cod are. This means that by uploading them to an Apache server, when the link in clicked it will either give you plain text of the contents, or an error message. This section will give you the simple steps to make it recognize, and know what to do with, your files.

1. Create a new text document, in Notepad for example.

2. Copy these 2 lines of code, exactly, into the new text doc:
Code:
AddType text/vnd.sun.j2me.app-descriptor .jad
AddType application/vnd.rim.cod .cod
3. Save As. Make sure you change the Save As Type to ALL FILES. Make the file name
Code:
.htaccess
Make sure it has the . as the first character.

4. Upload this file to the directory where your OTA files are or will be stored.

Please Note: If this method does not work, your Apache server may not set set to allow directory based overrides.

You can also set this up in your web serverxxx8217;s main configuration file. In most cases (if you are on a shared hosting plan for example) you do not have access to this file. In case you have access and want to change the mime type setting for your server globally you need to change the main configuration file (mostly called apache2.conf or httpd.conf).

Cool...good looking out Nick...going to have to use this depending on what I go with for the web space that I'm going to be making. Looks like I triggered alot of people into making things for ota downloads lol

Lol, you sure did, or they just realized that they weren't the only ones having the problem. It was frustrating when I first tried to upload OTA files, so hopefully this will help.

It's going to make things easier to just have them ota, instead of sending files to people and having them to load it on DM

Yep, and it's easier to control distribution that way too. If you send them the ALX and COD, they can give it to anyone else.

Thank you. I've been looking in all the forums for a simple illustrated "how to" for the OTA files.

Nice write up Nick. Seems like I recall Windows wants to put .txt at the end of the file and after I uploaded .htaccess, I had to change the name on the server to remove the .txt. How do you get Windoze not to add the file extension?

I did a save as and changed the save as type from txt to all files. You can always just rename the file .htaccess in your FTP client once uploaded. I use ChromeFTP as an add on to firefox, and this lets me change the filename including the extension of files that are on the web server.

Ok, thanks. I changed the file name and extension after I uploaded it on the server.
