Angry MP3 files show 0:00 length and get skipped

I have this bugging problem for a while. I tried to find workarounds but it is getting to the ridiculous level.

I have these podcasts, audiobooks and what have you, talk files that I like to listen to while I am commuting.

Normally, if you take a 2 hrs long mp3 file and use a ny run-off-the-mill file splitter and divide it up to say 20 smaller files, you end up with 6 minutes (give or take few seconds) long sections, alas, the last or the first second or so can sound garbled. I can live with that. But my crackberry can't. I can do this split and windows media player or any other player on my pc plays it without any problem. Load them into the music folder. Nada. '

Workaround, using a sound converter, convert these to wav files, re-encode them using lame encoder to mp3, they work.

Last night I got an audiobook on 6 cd's from a friend. Inside the cd's there are mp3 files of each chapter. So, no monkey business of splitting files necessary on my end. I copied the first 2 cd's worth mp3 files to my berry last night and in the morning grabbed it and started playing once I am on the freeway. At that time I realized most of the 35 or so mp3 files were showing up as 0:00 length. But when I got to my office, I plugges the usb cable (without using bbery desktop manager) downloaded these files to a folder on my pc and winamp player was merrily playing these.

What the heck is happening here ? Anyone have any clue ? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Update:
I realized, if I encode these mp3's from original CDs into wav then rip them back, I still am missing quite few with 0:00 time length when I upload them to my berry.
If I convert them to wma (directly from mp3 or from wav formats) everything is happy as clam. Is there a known problem with the mp3 decoding on the crackberry that I am not aware of ?
