Rogers BB 8820 turned on automatically this morning, and I noticed there was a continuous (solid) red LED light (i.e. not blinking but solid red). I could find no reason for it, and did not see any messages etc. Rebooted and it went away.

Researched but can find no answer. Does anyone know what a solid red light is trying to indicate?

The red LED indicator might be indicating no service detected. Are you showing reception bars?

recently with my 8830 Verizon the red indicator was for a java pointer exception error that went away with an enter key.

Yes reception is fine. I did load Vlingo the other day (but have not used), and wonder if it has something to do with that. That's the only "change" recently.
