Default Top right button on phone...

Please Login to Remove!

So I haven't seen much on this and it's starting to get to me...

What in the world is the button on the top right (mute button???) really supposed to do. I know it mutes the mic during a call but WTF... is that it? there is already a big fat button the my cheek likes to hit on its own the pops up when a call is in progress.. why do we need two buttons for the same darn purpose?!?!?! I heard or saw somewhere that the physical button can be used to toggle between ring profiles also... if this is true why doesn't the bloody kucfer work??

Any takes? I'd love some info on this...

That button also mutes alerts. I hold down that button when going into a meeting, a restaurant, a movie, etc. and it puts my phone into vibrate only mode and indicates that by vibrating. When I leave the meeting, I hold down the button again and it makes a sound to indicate that audible alerts are now turned back on. The case that I use leaves that button exposed so I can change the alert status without having to reomve the phone from its belt case.

Ok. That's what I thought. Now what I'm trying to figure out is why it won't do that for me. The button works to mute the mic during calls but when I press it otherwise it does nothing. Any tweeks or things I'm missing that any one would care to mention? I've already returned one device because the top buttons just stopped working... could I possible have another dud?

For some reason that only works when the phone is locked.

I just checked and it also works when the phone is in a case with the "sleeper" magnet.

I'm thrilled I just figured that out. I thought previously the phone must be locked using the lock button before this would work.

It will only mute the alert as it is playing. It will not switch the profile to All Sounds Off, which may be the mute people are thinking of.

It also allows you to stop music playback when you want or resume music playback if paused for other reasons. It may work on other media but i haven't tried that yet.

Seems to me that it has plenty of other uses.

Mine actually changes the profile. The one thing that people may not realize is that you have to hold the button down for like 5 seconds before it switches the profile. Also, I am talking about the Storm here. The same button procedure doesn't work the same way on my wife's Blackberry.

Actually, the mute button will toggle your sound profiles between Vibrate, and whatever profile you have currently set to active.

So if your Storm is currently in Silent, holding the mute button down will toggle between Vibrate and Silent.

And it only works if the phone is locked (I don't have a case so I can't comment if it works then or not).

Also to the OP if you get TalkLock it will stop your face from hitting the mute button while on a call.

If you are having trouble getting the toggle to mute alerts...hold the button down until it switches the alerts over...I had this same problem. I was originally just pressing the button which does not toggle them over.

I'm running the .85 software and mine will not change profiles when it is locked. The only time I can get profiles to change with this button is when the phone is in the holster, with the magnet activating sleep mode. Then it works flawlessly. But that is the only time it has any affect on the profile. At least for me...

I've seen a lot of comments about this but I've never accidentally muted a phone call this way. What are you all trying to do - make a cheek imprint while you're on the phone?? If you're holding the phone so hard against your face that it clicks the screen, maybe you need to relax your muscles a little - breath some!!
