While, that's you're decision it's based on a lack of knowledge of how a BlackBerry works. All OS's are developed by RIM for a device type, not a specific carrier. you will not "screw your device up" just by installing an OS from another carrier. Most likely Sprint will release a version of the OS that is not really the latest and will contain more bugs than one from another carrier. They are given all the versions to test and they may choose to wait for later versions for whatever reason.
I haven't run an OS from my carrier in over a year and my BlackBerry works just fine. You'll find this to be the case with most everyone here. Many times, in fact, an OS from another carrier works better than one from your carrier.
There are many reasons for updated OS's that RIM releases. RIM works with many partners, including developers of 3rd party apps. They actually find bugs from these partners and fix them in new releases. Your precious "Sprint Released" OS could very well be missing a necessary fix to get certain applications to work.
So, anyway, a little knowledge is necessary before you make a blanket statement saying another carrier's OS will screw up your device.
I recommend reading the sticky threads of the latest OS's for your particular device. You'll find the issues that most are having. What you don't see, however, are the hundreds/thousands who read these threads and load the OS's and have no issues and never even register on the site, let alone post that the update went fine with no issues.
Besides, a downgrade of an OS is just as simple as an upgrade. If you don't like it for whatever reason you can easily downgrade the OS.
Some try and say that it voids warranty. This is not true. It can affect the support you get from the carrier when you call and tell them you have an untested OS on your device. However, there is more support here for OS problems than you will ever find when calling customer support for any carrier.
