Default Few ATT 8820 Unlock & Travel Questions (not about unlocking)

Please Login to Remove!

I'm going to New Zealand in a few weeks and I have a few questions. I have an AT&T 8820 with the basic international calling plan (I think $5/month). I have been trying to get an unlock code from ATT for a few weeks but they keep jerking me around. Assuming I can get an unlock code from them - what is my best bet when I'm in NZ for cell service?

Ideally I'd like to have my BB function as it would here in the states - phone, email, internet, etc. but I think to do that I'll come home with an outrageous bill. Was thinking as an alternative that I'd unlock the phone and buy a pre-paid SIM down there... will that give me a new phone number? When I return will my IT department need to set up my mail push again?

We also have an older phone, a non-blackberry, would we be better off unlocking just the older phone and using that as a pre-paid SIM and forget trying to mess around with the Blackberry?

It depends on whether you want to use your Blackberry as a Blackberry. You can upgrade to the AT&T BB unlimited international data plan (~$69.99) and use your blackberry as is, except for phone part. For that the easiest is to unlock your old cell phone and use it as a local voice phone with a local SIM card.

If you use a pre-paid sim in your 8820 in New Zealand you will get a local # but no data. Communicate with emails and pin has much has you can that's included in your data plan and have people call you it's a little less $ than you calling.

Not many carriers offer prepaid Blackberry data service. You may, however, purchase the prepaid voice + data service overseas. With non-BB data service, you may use any non-BB application for emails and web.

If you need to obtain the unlock code, I can provide the AT&T unlock code for $15. Contact me with the IMEI of your device (billyng@teczilla.com) if you are interested.
