Kind of annoying to just wait for it to get back to EDGE since I miss emails. I know I can do a battery pull but that's also a pain.

Which city are you in? I"m in Southern California and I've noticed some recent dropping down issues as well with Tmobile. Signal strength is still strong however. Hasn't happened before and I've been in the same area for nearly 2 years now.
BTW, instead of a battery pull a simpler shortcut would be a reset. Just press ALT+(right)CAPS+DEL.
