Does anyone know for sure whether the VZW 8830 will get data support in Tokyo? Global Data pointed me to this map, and says I will:

Calling From Japan

I don't necessarily trust this map or the agent.

Not to be sarcastic, but just because it's called a "world phone" doesn't mean it will work anywhere on Earth that man can set foot. It didn't work a couple years ago when I was in Japan, and many other people have reported the same.

The Storm will work in Japan because it supports UMTS. The 8830 will not.

Same here. I was in Japan (various parts, including Tokyo) from 9/1 - 12/17 of 2008. BB8830 on Verizon was useless the whole time.

Japan no longer has 2G service, it is 3G only. This is why the new "World Edition" phones have a 2100MHz UMTS radio included with them now (i.e. The Storm).

My wife has an 8830 and had to switch to a Storm to get data in Japan. We'll find out if it works in a couple of days. Voice should work on either.
