Questions about changing themes

I'm a real newb at this. How do I change the theme? I have no idea where to start.
What is a good, reputable site I can go to for this?
Are there cons to changing a theme? Will it slow my BB down ?(BB Curve 8330)
I saw the Neo Berry theme for $8 on one site, and free on another. I just don't want to pick up a virus or something.
