Hello

I was wondering if there is anyway that my employer can track my movements via the GPS features on my blackberry?

My BB Bold is my own personal property and I pay the bill every month, it is not company issued.

It is however, able to obtain company emails via the company's BES

I am on AT&T

True for the company email server. Not everyone who is not on a BES has their Blackberry connected to a company email server.

There is an IT policy on the BES that, if set, allows the blackberry to periodically send GPS positions to the BES that are stored in the data base. However all the units I have seen with this policy set also query the user to enable/disable this feature. This is done with a dialog when the policy is downloaded, and can later be changed in Options -> Advanced Options -> GPS

I have a friend that uses bolds with his small company, they don't have a bes, they actually use gmail only as they're only a dozen people in a storefront. About half the guys are drivers who do deliveries/pickups and he installed google latitude on all the devices and then he setup the page to track them all on google maps. This helps him to know where delivery/pickup guys are at and to schedule each driver based on proximity for a job. Now the drivers have the full ability to disable the latitude from broadcasting, although if they do on the map it will show they're not broadcasting and in last known location. Never been an issue really but there is a way to do it via the gps if your not on the bes with software installed.

If you leave Google Maps running in the background (exit by pressing the escape button, or if that doesn't work the Alt Escape combination) then Latitude will continue to use the GPS. This is hard on the battery but if they are in a vehicle they could periodically recharge.

Just so that I understand this correctly.

I use my blackberry bold for both business and personal e-mails.

For my business e-mails I connect to their BES server.

For my personal e-mails, I have accounts on hotmail, yahoo, etc...

I have AT&T's enterprise package for my blackberry.

So for my personal e-mails, what you are saying is they they go through my company's BES server??

Also you are saying that they (my company) are able to track me via their BES??

Please advise.

I believe "people," myself included, keep "saying that" because we are speaking of BIS emails. There is the potential for the company to monitor personal emails if you connect your personal device to their BES.

I don't believe anybody is stating that your corporate email could be monitored if you're on a BES. That's just silly talk as anyone with common sense would know that they're already fully capable of doing so.

BES Admin here... I believe this is entirely false. What I can monitor is BES Email, contacts, Calendar, Tasks, SMS / MMS, BB Messenger, Internet Favs, and possibly a few other things.

GPS Tracking CAN be enabled, but is disabled by default.

I CAN NOT see any other email services you use via BIS.


*edit* Forgot to mention, that If you use BIS to access your work email (work email server) we can monitor that to, but not with BES, thats just standard server monitoring.

True, you can do that (in fact, we DO do that). However, when they reply as the BES email account, it's no longer a BIS email...it's a BES email.

Additionally, if someone doesn't ever reply as (and actually, you can't reply, you have to forward) the BES account, or if we didn't enforce that IT Policy, there is no way to read the BIS email that is sent to the device.

This is a complex subject. If I tried to code all the if/then/else/case/excepts in one function in collage my prof would have smacked me ;)

Not surprising we can all get caught leaving out a case.

You can, however, run an OTA device backup. The backed up databases would include BIS, as well as PIN, messages. You could look at those messages.

I've long theorized this was how those brokers busted a few years ago using PINs to circumvent message monitoring. This was before PIN messages could be logged and audited, leading some to believe that PINs were untouchable.
