Help! I got my first blackberry bold last week, and after a few problem-free days browsing I got a warning on my screen purporting to be from windows and telling me I have several trojans on my device. I thought BB's didn't support this kind of thing- what now?

You didn't happen to open up a piece of spam, did you? Since there are NO trojans or viruses for a BlackBerry. None.

Thanks all, very reassuring. Still a bit mysterious though, since I'm unaware of opening any emails from untrusted senders and I was on the Google homepage when the message popped up. Also, presumably any emails would have to pass through the spam filters on my email account? Anyway, is this thing likely to be lying dormant on my bb, ready to infect my pc when I connect, or will it just 'die' if my device doesn't support it?

Nothing will happen to your PC unless you opened the message on your PC.

Just a quick observation here....you worry about what a BB can do to your PC, but do you actually know what is on your PC?

Is your OS patched? AV signatures up to date? Running IE?

Before you point a finger at your BB, better check your PC first.

Depends upon which email account you use. If you are using the carrier supplied email account, then it is totally unfiltered for SPAM.

But opening spam on your device does not cause trojans to run on the device. Trojans do not affect BlackBerry. Period.

Trojan? I'm still trying to visualize what it is that he would have seen. Maybe he just browsed to a page with that info seeing that he was browsing when it happened.

Op, did you have the device hooked up to the pc when you got the message? Were you tethering the bb? Or did you actually get the message on the device itself? I mean I guess if you had mass storage mode and hooked it to an infected pc and copied files, its possible you have that infected file onb the device memory, but there's no way it could "infect" the blackberry.

But even if he did have a trojan on his PC, there is no antivirus app on the BlackBerry that is going to make that detection and produce that message. So whether or not it was connected to the PC or it was some file, the main point is there is no application to make that kind of "decision" on the BlackBerry. It has to be a page that he/she was viewing that probably showed an image within the browser or popped up a dialog box with that information.

I've only connected to my PC once, when I first loaded the bb software. My OS is Windows 2000, which is patched up and auto-updates. I use McAfee Internet suite with all the whistles and bells. My email providors are Tiscali and Hotmail, both of which have always proved pretty reliable at filtering spam. When the message popped up I was on the Google home page. Curioser and curioser.

This sounds like what would happen on a PC by going to a web page with a malicous banner ad, or a trojan rogue antivirus program like Antivirus2009, but those things don't affect a BlackBerry. I can't imagine why this would happen on a BlackBerry unless you clicked a URL or clicked an ad causing the message to be displayed on a web page.
