Default Same phone, Same SIM, works overseas, but not in US!

Actually I don't know where to ask this question. If you know a better place, please let me know.

I have a corporate blackberry with AT&T. The SIM card has a 3G mark on it. I also have a personal regular smart phone (non-3G). I want to use the SIM card with my personal phone. So I insert the SIM card into my personal phone, but

1) In the US, it does not work. I can only make emergency calls, but
2) Outside US, it works. (i.e. I can make regular phone calls)

What's going on?

(BTW, my personal phone is quad-band and works in US if I insert a T-mobile SIM card)

Your non 3G smartphone cannot connect to the network the sim card wants you to connect with; because the SIM is 3g and your phone isnt.
However, when out of the country, you are likely roaming on another network, and so are able to use it, as its then not the sim card that is dictating what network you connect to.

Thanks for the reply. But my corporate blackberry is 7290 which is not 3G, as far as I know.

The blackberry carrier is AT&T. My phone was bought without contract, unlocked. I can use all the SIM cards I tried, except this from AT&T Blackberry.

Is there any chance that AT&T detects that the handset is "not original" and thus blindly disables it? (i.e. the plan is Blackberry but the handset is not a blackberry? --- sounds a bit weired reason, but ...)
