Hi!

I just got a BB from a friend....I am not even sure of the model it is pretty old, it does have the trackwheel, not the ball....I switched my SIM card from my old phone and it works just fine, but I don't see how to get my phonebook off the card and into the phone? Is there not a way? Also, is there a way to get the "Data Connection Refused" message off my screen (I don't have Data service, but I went to Options and didn't see a Mobile Settings choice....Thanks in advance for anyone's help, I really appreciate it!

You should be able to find out the model number one of two ways:

Look under the battery.

Look for a menu that says Options. The first option should be "About". This option will tell you your model number and OS.

Once you know your model number and OS, you should be able to get better help.

Try this. Go to your address book. Press the menu key (looks like a key with a bunch of dots on it. One of the options should say "SIM Phone Book". Select that. Press the menu key again. One of the options should say "Copy All to Address Book". These instructions may not work on your BB as the menus may be different. Wording may be slightly different but if it sounds similar to what I posted, try it. (I used the 8830 with OS 4.5.0.138. Menus may vary by OS version.)

Is the BB unlocked or is it a TMO BB? If not a TMO BB and you want to use it on TMO, it will have to be unlocked.

IIRC the trackwheel models don't have that key. I think you have to press the trackwheel in.

Probably not. I think the Data Services option is only on the more recent BB operating systems. If you can verify the model number that would help.

i would use your blackberry desktop manager to transfer this phone book. it would be the easiest way.

Thanks. I probably thought the menu key had been there forever but I never had a pre-trackball BB.

Desktop Manager will be the way to go.

The new version of desktop Manager ver. 4.6.0 and up will have the device switch wizard.

I have user this for an upgrade from an old 8700 to a newer curve 8900 and it worked seamlessly. the software can be downloaded from blackberry's web site if you dont have it.

To get your addresses from your SIM, go to the Address Book. Access the menu (press trackwheel down) and go to SIM Phone Book. Access the menu again, and select Copy All To Address Book.

I think that should work. Luckily for you RIM haven't changed their OS much.

Edit: Still hark back to my 8700 with trackwheel - much better than the trackball.

First of all, thanks so much for all your suggestions.....it turns out I have the 7200 series....specifically it is either the 7250 or 7290 I think...with your help i moved the numbers, no problem =)....i also managed to connect it to my computer, but with no data package, is there really anything I can do with it there? do you need a data package to access the internet on the phone or will the phone pick up my wireless internet here in the house? thanks again for all your help!!

when connected to your computer, you do things such as transfer files, backup and restore databases, and upgrade the OS.
having a data plan has nothing to do with that.

Not 7250 -- that one was CDMA. Were you able to get into the options menu/about to find out which one it is specifically? What carrier comes up on the boot screen?

You do need a data package to access the internet. The 7200 series does not support wireless internet (except it looks like the 7270 which was wireless only if I'm reading correctly? Didn't know they made one like that.)

erm......
no.
just plug your BB in, if you have mass storage mode enabled, a prompt will come up on your BB. click yes.
then 2 drives will show up like pen drives, and just drag and drop
easy.

o i c - well i dont think my phone does mass storage mode....(it is the 7290 and doesn't seem to do much of anything besides phone calls lol....no picture messaging, no speakerphone....<sigh> but i really only wanted the qwerty keyboard, one day ill be able to afford to upgrade...i dont suppose anyone out there has an old bluetooth headset they want to give away? =)
