How does the Bold know whether or not it is in its holster? I do not have this particular holster, but instead an ordinary leather case. Is there a way to spoof the device into thinking it's in its holster?

I believe the holsters contain a small magnet that activates sleep mode.

Correct. There is a magnet that lets the BlackBerry know it needs to sleep because it is in a holster. You can check this by holding a small magnet to the keyboard (where specifically seems to be a bit different on each device, just move the magnet around a bit). The screen will turn off when the magnet is present, and will turn back on when the magnet is removed.

This might sound wierd, but you could find out where that place is, by holding a magnet near the keyboard, and then gently slip a tiny magnet inside your non-RIM holster, in that place. Just an idea.
