Default 7130e Modem

Please Login to Remove!

I just got the new 7130e and tried to query the modem via diagnostics so I can use it as a modem for my laptop, but I am getting no response from the modem. I reinstalled it a few times, but it still doesn't work. Any body have a similar problem?

Did you sign up with Verizon for the plan that allows "tethered" access? If you have a voice/Blackberry data plan, I think it's $15/mo additional. I assume that's what you mean when you say you want to use it as a modem. Are you using the VZ software too?

Im not sure if this will work, but over in the 8700 Series section barJohn give setup info for modem connection. I know the dial-up string he mentions won't work on VZW but the modem init strings might.

Does anyone know the dialup string for VZW data? Without EVDO provisioned can you still connect 1x data without being charged?

The problem is that if you do not pay the 15.00 it is going to give you errors about invalid username and password.

Come on it is only $15.00 and that is for broadband speeds as well. I am cheap but not that cheap

I know. However why can you not connect to the 1xRTT using #777 ???
I also get the invalid username/password using [email address], password=vzw

Also, there's rumor the $15.00 is a promotional price. It may double to $30.00 then its not a question of being cheap.

There is no additional $15 fee to use a tethered modem with the 7130e like there is with the 7250, and least with my pretty basic core package of 450 voice minutes and unlimited blackberry. That's what makes the unit additionally attractive to me. When I called Verizon and ordered my 7130e (which came today) I specifically went through all the specifics to ask for to get the 7250 tethered. It was not necessary and just confused them. It should be all ready to go, according to the guy who helped me, who seemed quite knowledgeable about this specific issue.

Not too sure about that. When I first got my 7130 and tried to connect via modem I kept getting Username/Password failed. After I have them provision EVDO tethering I've had no problems using VZAccess software.

Additionally, without using VZAccess you will need to have the Desktop Manager running before it will talk to the standard modem.

I believe that you are right and that I am wrong. I am encountering the error message: "Verizon Wireless Broadband Access was denied because the username or password was invalid in the domain."

According to the Verizon 7130e FAQs:
What do I need to use my BlackBerry device has a Modem?
To use your BlackBerry as a modem, you must first contact Verizon Wireless and have your device provisioned for Tethered Access modem service. Once provisioned correctly, you must install the following software:

BlackBerry Desktop Software v4.1 found here: http://vzw.smithmicro.com/blackberry/

VZAccess Manager for BlackBerry found here: http://vzw.smithmicro.com/download/

Once you have installed both software items, connect the 7130e BlackBerry device to your PC or Laptop computer via the USB cable included with the device, open VZAccess Manager and select “Connect WWAN”.

http://dts.vzw.com/devices/blackberr...l?grp=1#item26

I'll call Verizon and have them provision my device for tethered access modem service, and then let you know what happens.

I had Verizon provision my device for tethered access modem service. It took all of 2 minutes, tech support knew exactly what to do, and after that I was able to use my Blackberry 7130i as a modem for my laptop. It works very well. I am impressed.

This is interesting. I just called Verizon to have my 7130e "device provisioned" and the woman I spoke to told me that it IS an extra service, even though I have the full $50 all-the-time access and plus voice plan. Another $15/month. I told her I had heard otherwise but she was certain. Are you folks positive that you aren't going to have to pay for the additional service? If so, I'll try again and see if I can "escalate".

Even better, does anyone have a link to any Verizon page that mentions that it's included with the service? That would be perfect as "evidence".

And yes, I know it's "only" $15/month, but I'd only need it a three or four times a year, so I don't consider it worth it.

I'm in New England, US, and not using BES.

Thanks

Yes, it costs $15/month, and no, it may not be worth it!

On the line with VZW support as I type this. They say I have to pay the $15 a month to get the phone provisioned. Despite giving them the OK, they still cant get it working.

UPDATE: After 1.5hrs, they finally got it going when the problem was escalated. From VZW Access Manager they had me go into a terminal screen (CTRL-T) and enter som AT commands. After that it worked. They also said the $15 provides unlimitted access and doesn't use minutes. Pretty good deal.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear it's not one of those "no, just you" situations.

Does anyone have info about using the 7130e as a tethered modem on Bell in Canada? How about Telus?
