For my computer there are a variety of programs that use the machine's computing power when it's idle to crunch through research data for various projects the public may be interested in (boinc.berkeley.edu, SETI at home...) kinda creating an impromptu supercomputer.

Are there any similar projects that a blackberry can do? I'm figuring this may be prohibitive in terms of battery life and other factors, but thought I'd ask....

Your last sentence answers your question besides the carriers may see the constant traffic and block the phone claiming excessive use.
