Default Motorola USB Charger Killed my Bold!

Please Login to Remove!

So my wife and I both have a Bold, and I upgraded both our Bolds to 5.0. Mine worked fine for a week, but hers the next day wouldn't turn on... but it did work fine after the upgrade.

Long and short, after hours of work on the phone, and I have recovered many a dead blackberry via JL Commander etc.. this one was dead. I felt bad that I thought it was the OS, but it got really hot when it was plugged in, and killed the battery even if I gave it a fresh one. I had it replaced under warranty. But mine still worked... until the next day mine died too.

Once I Realized I was using a Motorla USB charger (which had worked flawlessly for my Curve, Pearl, and 8700) threw it in the trash. No more problems!

I sort of realize why Blackberry went to proprietary USB chargers, if some vendors like Motorola will use proprietary electronics in their standard looking chargers. I know this because I had trouble using blackberry chargers on motorola fonse previously, turns out there is like a 75 ohm resistor across ground and that seemed to kill the bold, although not bother the other 5 blackberry varieties I've had.

Funny story... sort of.

Proprietary chargers? RIM used Mini USB as you Bold and all of the previous devices you've mentioned use. RIM recently moved to Micro USB which is the new standard for electronics. It is hardly proprietary by any means.

hmm... I just assumed it was proprietary because I had not seen it anywhere else. Maybe that will be the new standard. Glad to hear that it's not a proprietary device! Hope the electronics are standardized for everyone though, as "same plug" doesn't mean "same electronics" at least between Motorola and RIM was concerned on Mini USB. I hope that they standardize the electronics portion as well.

I believe the EU mandated that all phones use the same chargers to eliminate proprietary chargers. I hope the US adopts some similar policy soon.

Well, I've narrowed it down to the charger as being the culprit. It's the only thing that could have fried the USB charging circuit. It's not normal, but I've never heard of a charger going bad?
The question is if you're successfully using Motorola chargers, is it the old school RAZR type which only accepted Motorola proprietary chargers, i.e. 75 ohm resistance to ground. Basically if you plugged in any other USB Mini charger to the RAZR series other than the Moto charger with the 75ohm resistor, it would say something like "hands free device", and wouldn't charge the phone. This is the series charger I was using which unless it sporadically went bad as soon as I plugged in a Bold (it had been charging curves and pearls for years), I suspect we may be using different Motorola Chargers. It seems if they have one proprietary mini usb design, they may also have others which work fine...

I use a lot of chargers on my bold. Motorola AC, Motorola car, Verizon car, ATT car, generic chinese car, BB AC, USB PC cables... I top up charge it, charge it part way, leave it charging for hours after it's full. After a year or so of that it works like it did when new. Go figure.
