BBIM messages on "standby" mode

It seems sometimes that my BB has the outgoing messages on "standby" more, where the check sign is there, yet no D appears. I find myself "pushing" things, by launching the web browser and loading any page in order to force the phone to use the GPRS. Does anyone know why is this happening? Is it normal?
I am running OS 4.6 and the latest build of the BBIM.
Forgot to add, I tend to PING!!! people too in order for the message to go out, if not it is still in the same "standby" mode.
