BBmaps now uses cell Tower triangulation - new ?
Please Login to Remove!
Today,
for the first time, I got a location fix within "3000 meters" using BB maps.
Does work without wifi too.
I never saw this before - previously BBmaps either displayed no location, or I had to use GPS.
Is this new to me only ?

does it only do this if the GPS is off? google maps does this and switches to GPS when available. Interesting change though.

Wirelessly posted
I noticed this for the first time day before yesterday. I was in a hotel room, away from the window. I was going to do a local search and just enter the city and state, knowing I wouldn't get a location fix. But it opened showing appoximate loaction with the 3000 m radius. Cool.

I just open BB-maps, and, I see my location.
If GPS reception is possible I get a better fix when activating GPS.
That happend to work after a restart of the device today.
right, works like google maps now - I always missed this option in BB-Maps.
I have two other BB9000, they still work only with GPS, but I am restarting them now - lets see, what happens to these after the reboot.

Still wish ATT would let go of TeleNav and stop blocking Maps.

might be just random coincidence, but, compared to google maps, the result is much more accurate - I have to try this out somewhere else.
I think google maps uses just the nearest tower, but If the phone/system (?) really does triangulation a fix within 20meters is AFAIK possible.

I used BB maps on previous units and feel it is much better than most.

I checked a few more things:
The location reported is different depending if on a 3G or 2G connection
The location fix is not dependent on the "data service" of or on status of the "mobile network options"
A location fix without GPS is only possible if the option "location data" option in the GPS options is set to yes.
