I know the 8700c doesn't have built-in GPS, which makes apps like TeleNav work great on the 7520. So, does anyone know of a good application (free or otherwise) for driving directions that makes use of the full-screen of the 8700c? I don't mind having to press a button for "next direction". Doesn't seem that mapquest mobile works for the 8700c.

The basic driving directions from google maps/mapquest are OK, but less than optimal given the capabilities of the 8700c.

Forget using your phone for driving directions...thats a major PITA anyway...

BB's are good for a lot of things, but getting you where you need to go isn't one of them...I know somebody here will flame me for this...but you can't beat a nav unit for driving and this one takes the cake!

I just use mapquest or yahoo maps and get the directions that way when I only have my 8700, I do also have a Nextel 7520, and I have to admit, Telenav is a sweet, easy to use, and quite good application for the blackberry, but I will agree with stevew, that there are better ways to go.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'd rather not spend another $1000 on a device. I was mainly looking for a piece of software that would use the full screen of the 8700c. Berry 411 is an OK substitute (for basic text directions). And although I can't get it to work, apparently J2MEMap does display the directions overlayed on a map.

Hopefully Google will update Google Local for Mobile to work for the 8700c in the future.

it does EXACTLY what you want. UI is a bit clunky as first, you will have to get used to it, but it is GREAT. Does almost exactly what you want in terms of directions etc. i use it all the time in NYC to find places downtown. the biggest limititation is that it only supports a limited number of major metro areas right now.

This does EXACLTY what you want, VERY slick. Takes full advantage of the 8700c screen, fast downloads with EDGE and great single button animated driving direction stepping forward or backward. Highly recommended software.

Ca't get past the Get Started page on my 8700c running on the T-Mobile network.

I thought I'd give it a go even though it says it doesn't work on the TMO net or Nextel or BREW-enabled phones. EDGE is EDGE right?

google local is the number one piece of software IMO. It is amazing. You can not only get driving directions with a map but you can get the satalite image and zoom in sooo close that you can see cars parked in parking lots. It gives you step by step instructions and it is easy to use so that if you were driving while do it, it is as simple as pushing next for the next step in the directions. I highly recommend using google local/maps for directions, its AMAZING.

FYI - I am running GoogleLocal on my 8700c unlocked on the t-mobile network using the most recent 8700r 4.1. handheld OS 4.10.206.

I had to change my BB browser settings, I was spoofing as MSIE. I changed back to BlackBerry. DID a softreboot (alt-num-del) and then I was able to download the application. It runs perfectly. It is the number #1 killer app for the 8700 IMHO, it is SUPER fast with EDGE.

I am not worried about data overage charges whatsoever, but I am on t-mobile. Already at 2549KB down. Interesting real-time free memory indicator in the about/info screen. I am running about 50784 free out of 59123KB. You?

i noticed I can browse google local for a short time, then it stops loading (just shows loading on top) and sits there... if I exit and go back in, I can browse a little more and it happens again.

any ideas if this could be something on my end such as some buried cache setting that gets cleared when I exit and go back in?

Mine also hangs with loading every now and again. Remember this is rev #1 of a beta. Should get more stable as time goes along.
