Yesterday I installed the 4.1 code from CSL on my 7100v (removing the vendor.xml file of course). The enhancements seem pretty sweet and after a days heavy usage it all feels nice and stable. One thing I noticed though was that it does seem a little slower going in to menus and applications than previous versions. This got me thinking a little bit about how resource hungry the 4.1 code is on older units:

1) We already know that 4.1 code will see the end of the 7230 and 7730 devices as the code will simply be too big to install on them.

2) The 8700 (and the devices which will follow on from it) have stronger processing power which (assumption here as 8700's are not out in the UK yet) run 4.1 code quicker and more effeciently than devices with older processors.

So surely this spells the end of the line for the 7100 and we are going to see a replacement soon with a SureType keyboard.

Just one to think about!!!!!!

It looks like the powers that be were listening!!!!!

RIM will be launching the 8707 (a 3G device) and 7130 (to replace the 7100) from April this year in the UK. I know some of you lucky Americans have been running the 7130 for a while but I think the 8707 is a new one.

These will no doubt be running 4.1 code.

The 7130 is a CDMA device... Since your location reads London I presume there will be another another device since CDMA is not available there..

We were basically having this same argument over a year ago when 4.0 hit the streets.

People were posting that 4.0 was slower on the 2G phones than 3.7 was. And well, they were right but after you get your entire operation to 4.0 people start to forget that and move happily along with their much loved, now completely wireless-everything, phone.

It would be the same as taking two identical computers, and installing Windows XP on one of them and Windows 2000 on the other. I'm a fan of 2000 for it's speed but XP is nice for its added in things like integrated wireless support, task bar grouping and support for more "stuff"

While we're on the subject, I wonder if we'll see a 7130-like device that runs HSDPA or UMTS?

EDGE is "OK" but really not *that* much of an improvement over GPRS.

Actually I think the EDGE, from a browsing perspective, is much faster than GPRS - and I don't run any speed tests and have no proof other than my wife has a 7100t and I have an 8700c (running on T-Mobile) and web access to the same site is much faster on the 8700C. Part of that is attributable to the faster CPU, but I think EDGE must play some role in it.

Well my only experience with EDGE is some Sierra 860 cards we have. Edge just seems to crawl along when browsing.

I have tested Edge speeds on my 8700 and on a Siera G89 card. I get about 140kbs Download. Better than GPRS but not much better. EVDO is much faster, btw, I get between 600-700kbs with my EVDO devices. Bottom line, while Edge is faster than GPRS, it still really doesn't impress me enough.

i have the CSL 4.1 code on my 7100R as well and i've noticed the menus are slower...

I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced any better phone performance with this 4.1 code. The reason that I had gotten rid of my 7100g for an 8700 was the fact that the phone under 4.0 was terrible. I actually ended up downgrading the device to 3.8, but the bugs associated with that version were too much to deal with.

Has 4.1 on the 7100 solved the issues of low phone volume, poor BT volume and garbled, mechanical-like audio?
