Default Question about 6.0 upgrade

Please Login to Remove!

I am running 9700 5.0 and I am planning to upgrade to 6.0.
Before I start the upgrade, will it check for compatibility of my software? I don't want to lose the software that I like using on my 5.0 if they are not compatible with 6.0

Additionally, will I have to do another enterprise activation? Last time I did an upgrade to latest 5.0 OS release, I did not have to activate again. Activate is a bit PITA because I have to find my IT admin and wait for him to get back to me..

Thanks.

It will not check. The device will wipe and the new OS will load. You will most likely have to check each 3rd party app you have to see if it is compatible with the new OS. Some are, most are not. If you intend on upgrading, make sure that yu have a good backup in place before you start.

If you are on BES, I would make sure that the BES Admin and/or IT staff approves it and can support the new OS. This is especially important if the company owns the device and pays for it. You will probably need a new activation.

My advice to anyone thinking of upgrading the OS is this: If your BB is working as you want and need it to perform, then it is not broken and therefore does not need to be fixed with an OS upgrade. the forum is full of OS gone bad. But on the other hand, we rarely hear of those that work as advertised with no problems whatsoever.

I really liked the switch to OS6. Have few apps, BBWeather, google maps and wordpress, they all continued to work great. There is plenty of eye candy which I always like but I also think is a lot more efficcient, intuitive and user friendly. But I am not a power user. I really like it.

Just an FYI - when you load an OS to a BB on a BES, if you're running Exchange and Outlook, the BBDM will automatically perform an Enterprise activation to restore data, regardless of previously backed up data during the upgrade, all with no need for an activation password to be setup on the BES itself. It will perform the activation using the connection at that PC...and if interrupted, will continue by any means the BB can use.

I did it last night, thank you for all the comments and opinions, (for some reason I was not notified once again of topic replies) anyway, it took no more than 30 minutes, and using BBBoss I was able to shrink the installation and maintain all my 3rd party applications. I was surprised to see so many junk still come with the installation after shrinking.

Everything was there, I did not even have to restore my 3d party applications, including saved passwords, etc..

I really like OS 6, but is is making me sad with a few glitches.

-Wallpaper does not stick, and reverts to default blue AT&T logo after reboot/battery pull
-Email list takes up too much space on screen, instead of 15 e-mails (forgot exactly how many it was), I can only see 8 at most. I don't even have lines in between.
-Sometimes it will just hang doing the simplest thing.
-I was greeted with a pitch black screen about 30 minutes after inactivity, and there was no way to resuscitate my blackberry. Red e-mail indicator was blinking, but no response to any button combination.
-WeatherBug Alerts do not allow scrolling (possibly app problem)
-When in Media screen, clicking Browse the device stuck in hourglass for about 5 minutes, finally allowed me to back out.
-Unable to display .pdf files (I get an error that says Unable to display file /media card/...

I have 9MB of Memory left with MSN running.

If you rely on a lot of apps in 5.0, 6.0 may not be a good choice. The 9700 doesn't really have enough memory to handle 6.0 and a lot of apps. Expect to have about 60M free after installing 6.0 with no apps. I loaded my 9700 with 6.0 and that is the only complaint I have.

I have a lot of apps installed, but I believe I can get rid of 20-25mb easily.
Worst case, I will go back to 5.0.

Question about going back: I assume I will need to wipe/JL_Cmder in order to go back to 5.0. I have my regular backup & switch device folder. Will I be able to get all my data back? I will seriously consider going back to 5.0 if it keeps getting stuck with hourglass even after I clean up & get rid of apps/games.

Just follow this: How do I downgrade the OS on my BlackBerry? - BlackBerryFAQ. I'm sure there's a number of members who have downgraded from v6 back to v5 for various reasons. Backup your data before you downgrade. You should have no problems.

Thanks, I am getting rid of some apps now and will give 6.0 another chance, but I am guessing there is a reason why 6.0 is not being released for 9700 here in USA..

I must have missed where you said you had 9mb of memory left after installation. That is most definitely not enough. So quite possibly getting rid of the apps will be the answer. Let us know.

Removed bunch of apps, I thought would give me at least 50MB space, but right now I am at Free Memory: 29,081,814 Bytes. How is this now? I should have left the sample pictures out as well..

Better. You say you used an OS shrink program? Maybe run it again and get rid of all unnecessary stuff that you don't need. Do you still have a lot of 3rd party apps on the phone?

I have a few more which I can possibly remove. I will try it like this and then see if this made a difference.
