Default 7100i no longer availble via Nextel Retail

Please Login to Remove!

Newbie here, but tried to take my 1st steps towards the BB today. I went to my local Nextel retail shop to pick-up the 7100i and was told they were no longer selling this model due to "poor performance" and high customer returns. Has anyone else ran across this?

Everything, I have read about the 7100i was pretty positive and the unit sounded like it was awesome, yet they pull it from the shelves? Does not make sense too me...... Based on everyone's experince with the 7100i, should I go ahead and purchase one of these on-line or go with another emodel (maybe the 7520)? I have to stay with NExtel due to work, so my choices are limited. thanks in advance for any advice.

Call tele sales and see if they tell you the same thing 95 percent of the time the retail stores don't know what the hell they are talking about. You'll have to wait a few days if you order over the phone.....but if this is true your best bet would be the 7520

It's still on the Sprint/Nextel website. Something tells me they are out at your local retail store, and they wanted to sell you something else!

I agree, the retail store employess i have talked with could not find their way out of an open bag. Anyway i had some issues with my 7100 when i first purchased it and they replaced it. Since then it has worked great. I would not trade it for another model at this point.
I will go visit my local store and ask just for a good laugh. I say laugh b/c i am sure they will tell me some ****&bull story which will differ from your info.
The left hand never knows what the right hand is doing (that would be too easy).

I have no information on whether the 7100i is still available at the retail level, but I would say many people thought the 7100i would be a step-up from the 7520. Many 7520 owners switched and were very disappointed...me included. For those that never had the 7520 and went straight to the 7100i as their first Nextel...they didn't really have anything to compare to and were likely happy.

Just my 3 cents (adjusted for inflation). Your mileage may vary.

I ordered mine Monday through my Nextel retail store here in MA and had it Tuesday. I did, however, make a note on my contract for an automatic upgrade (no charge) to the 8700 when it is released next month. I suspect that the pending 8700 release may mean they are drawing down on their inventories.

^^^^ Me also. I had no idea there was another BB model coming out. But I know better than to walk in a retail store and ask for it. I'll check with our Nextel rep here, and I'll be sure to pass the info along. But as for the 7100i not being available, that's the first I've heard of it. I would have thought the RIM lawsuit would have an effect, but I thought wrong...luckily.

I got my 7100i about 3 weeks ago. When I got it they told me that a regional rep.had taken the last one's they had in stock due to high corporate demand in the area. Because of this I picked up my phone the next day from the store. Other than this I haven't heard anything about them not being available. I agree that maybe they wanted the quick sale by selling you something else.

I just switched to a 7100i this week. When I went to make the switch I tried 2 local NRS and neither had one in stock. I landed up ordering it from tele-sales and hed it overnight.

I havent had any problems with mine at all, just user errors my store that I went to had plenty in stock, and I just called to humor myself and they still have them in stock. I think the rep might have been selling wolf tickets instead.

an 8700 on Nextel is longer than a month off...how long did we wait for a 7100 from Nextel?

I ust bought my wife one today. I went to the first store but they wanted too much (234) for it. I drove to another and they gave it to for 199 minus the discount.

Based on history... IF nextel gets an 8700 model, you can bet it won't be for at least a year. They have to get it to all the other vendors first I guess .. I figure Tmobile is next followed by Verizon. Then once two new models comes out and a few more law suits, Nextel will get one..

Now for the kicker.. is the fact that iDEN for Nextel will go away in four years going to have an impact on whether Sprint or Nextel get the next BB model. My bet is the next BB from the stables of Nextel/Sprint will be the Sprint model on CDMA.

I hope they put DC or Ready Link in it. That would be cool!

Sprint/Nextel has published (in FAQs on their website) that they are committed to upgrade and develop the iDEN network for at least the next decade. go2duke, where did you hear that the Nextel network will only be around for only four more years? Maybe that's a change but if so, that would be a bad change.
