Default Blackberry (or other deta device) In Tokyo, Japan?

Please Login to Remove!

Our users are avid blackberry users and we will be opening up shop in Tokyo by the end of the month. To the best of my knowledge they don’t use CDMA/GPRS in Japan. Are there any alternative blackberry or mobile data devices that work in Japan? Tmobile says they have a roaming partner but I need to have a 3G phone? Do I I just take the sim out and put in this 3G device?

Default 8707v with Cingular sim

Just picked up a Vodaphone, had it unlocked, went through the BB site and they changed all the settings automatic. I put in my Cingular sim for this. Currently in Australia and everything works good except unable to get Yak-on to work as of now. The 8707v is slightly slower in the response time compared to the 8700 but if it works in Japan with the Cing sim it will be well worth it. I head over there in 2 days and will post whether it does or not.Vodaphone will unlock over the computer with no problems.

Several of our clients have users who go to Japan - we provided them with 8707v devices.

Default BB Japan usage

I just landed in Japan with a new 8707v. I'm using a Cingular sim and it works perfectly. I'm connected with the Vodaphone/NTT Docomo system at 3g. Since I travel overseas frequently this works good for me. I won't be able to connect to Edge when I'm back in the US but a small price to pay to having a BB in Japan.

Smile Cingular Blackberry coverage in Japan, with 8707v

I am looking forward to use my 8707v (on Cingular) in Japan. My Blackberry has an older 32kB SIM. Is that a potential problem? Do I need to upgrade the SIM card to a new 3G compatible 64kB unit?

Thanks for the very helpful info!

Not 100% sure but I think you're going to have to get the 64k. Also when you get to Japan make sure you have the network set to 3g and not 2g. I've had a couple of problems in the automatic search mode for the network and when I switched to manual and did a search it locked on no problem. I've used NTT docomo.

Hmm... does that mean that the 8700g should also work in Japan? Mine is on the T-Mobile network here in the US....

Nope, that unit won't work. Just the 8707v for now.

No. The Pearl does not have the proper bands.
