The 7100i does not have the ability to send SMS. However, sending an MMS message with only text has the same effect. You will be charged the SMS rate for MMS messages that only include text.

Also, your BB Data Plan does not cover sending/receiving SMS/MMS messages. You will be charged per message unless you have a text messaging plan.

You can get free outgoing SMS messages by sending them via email to [email address]. Substitute the number with whoever you're trying to send the SMS to.

Text isn't data, so no, it isn't dumb. SMS messages are sent over the actual telephone network, not via the packet data network like MMS or e-mail.

If you send a text only MMS you are charged for a standerd text message rate. Which is 10 cents if you do not have a Text message plan. I called Nextel to find this out since my X loves to send text messages. Nextel offers unlimited texts for $15 or 500 for $8. How ever if you stick a picture, ringtone, or anything else in there you are charged 15 cents for the MMS. Make sence to you?

I do not get charged for sending mms regardless if its text only or with a pic. All my mms are covered in my data plan with bb.

I understand that. No iDEN BlackBerry device has that capability. It is a limitation of the network that prevents mobile-originated SMS. I posted what I did to help you understand what SMS is, and why a data plan doesn't normally cover SMS, regardless of the carrier. If you are a heavy SMS user, then T-Mobile is your best bet for BlackBerry service.

You are mistaken. SMS and MMS are both sent over the phone network, which is why they can be sent/received by any phone regardless of provider. They are NOT included in the data plan (at least for NEXTEL).

As bcrowie suggested, you should send SMS/MMS via teleflip (email).

I have unlimited text and data, and I send MMS messages just like any other text w/o any attachments and it works just fine!
