Hi,

I've spent a fair amount of time reading and researching these two phones / plans but the best prices on Amazon show:

Cingular:
8700c = $50 (after rebates), free shipping
900 rollover minutes, unlimited off-peak = $60
Blackberry unlimited service = $45


T-mobile:
8700g = free (after rebates), free shipping
1000 anytime minutes, no other minutes included = $60
Blackberry unlimited service = included free

So T-mobile is a lot cheaper (provided I don't use up my 1000 minutes), which makes me wonder if there is something wrong with their service.

Also wanted to double check with the experts to see if there is anything materially different about the 8700 c and g.

I believe that the 8700c doesn't have edge technology. I could be wrong though. But if I'm right that is a huge difference.

There is nothing "wrong" with Tmobile's service at all, provided you are in a coverage area. Tmobile is a strong as anyone in major cities and along interstates as far as I can tell in my experience.

Look at the coverage maps for a comparison.

I switched from Cingular to TMobile in April because it is much more economical for me, I rarely if ever go over 1000 minutes.

I know a bunch of people here in NYC who have moved to TMO because of the all in minutes and mail plan you describe above (that's what I have). I think it is crazy Cingular doesn't offer something similar. I would have stayed on if they had.

But I am completely happy with Tmobile.

I have had Cingular for years (all the way back to when they were Houston Cellular down here).

We do have EDGE. I have the 8700c and its on EDGE right now (no pun intended). I have excellent service on Galveston Island.

I have a family talk plan with a whole bunch of minutes, and I have the BIS unlimited which is only 29.99 when you have a voice plan.

The 8700c does have EDGE. Mine is running it as we speak.

The 8700g keyboard sucks compared to an 8700c. Then again, I wouldn't pay the rates Cingular has. So get a 8700c and unlock it for use on T-Mobile.

As has been stated on this thread -- only if coverage is poor in your area. YMMV. TMO had dead spots where I used to live so I'm with Cingular still.

Nope, same device, different cosmetics (as discussed over and over here).

I was on Cingular for many years until I switched to T-Mobil about 3-years ago due to Cingular's poor customer service. As far as I can tell, the coverage area and signals are virtually the same in all major cities. So I would recommend going with the cheaper plan...
